124 Wagon Lock Assembly

What's the trick to removing the lock assembly from the rear hatch on the 124 wagon? Sometimes when I lock from the doors the rear lock attempts to lock, but noticeably binds on something in the lock assembly (where the lock knob and inner door handle is) and doesn't lock. I attached a pic of the part in question.

I already removed the plastic bezel around the assembly and the lock knob. I just don't want to break anything. Yes I've already broken my 3rd brake light housing and taped it back together with blue duct tape. Those darn things are expensive!

There are some plastic push pieces on the bottom of the tailgate. I took those off and was able to get to the lock. I can't remeber if there is anything else you need to remove. Does your auto closing device work? Mine doesn't, but I did get the lock to work by snapping a steel arm back on to a plastic piece. I should have taken pictures. How do you keep breaking the 3rd brake light?

Thanks I'll take another look at it. I was hoping I wouldn't have to remove the hatch door panel (carpeted), but I probably won't be able to avoid that.

I broke my 3rd brake light housing when I tried to take it apart (it is two-halves of plastic that snap together) because the reflector piece broke free from the plastic and was making this damn annoying rattle sound. By the time I got the brittle plastic apart I had sufficiently broken all the main clips off, I was able to fix the rattle though

The 3rd brake light is sold as a complete unit (two pieces of plastic, and the bulb assembly) from the dealer for something like $150

Duct tape is working fine for now

Now, back the the lock assembly...
