Question: Vacuum pump on 82 300SD

My door locks, fuel flap and near all vacuum components are in need of attention. During my troubleshooting I discovered that there is an electrical vacuum pump in the trunk, I thought all vacuum was supplied by the engine pump. Can someone explain to me what is the function of this pump and under what parameter it operates. It is very difficult to troubleshoot something you don't know how it's suppose to operate. For example: are all locks vacuum operated (I don't see any lines going into the front doors).

The 126's (SD) have another pump, as you have found out. I thought it was for the doors, etc. May be mistaken. Mine is okay.

That is correct, the vacuum pump in the trunks runs the locks. There is a vacuum element on all four doors, one in the trunk and one for the fuel door.

Also, in the later model w126's this pump pumped up the lumbar support in the seats which was an option I believe.

How does this all come together when the system works properly. I have always locked the doors manually, and the fuel flap... I have to open the trunk and then pull the lock mechanism under the covers to open it.

The pump does not come on... traced it to the switch on the driver side door... there appears to be no DC voltage to the switch with the car on.

At this point suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The driver's side door has an electric switch that triggers the pump in the trunk. Have you checked to make sure that it has not come unplugged? Next you have to check the vac pods on each door to find out which one is leaking. You can use a hand vac pump or plug each line at the pod and keep working the door switch to see which doors start working. Have you checked the pump in the trunk to make sure there is electrics coming to it? Check the fuses etc. You can oreder new parts here or go to a boneyard and pull some parts so you can get going. Use the search function at the top of this page the amount of info here is amazing, Good Luck.
