300 SDL vs 350 SDL

I'm not too familiar with anything other than the W123's when it come to Mercedes, but I really like the look of the 300 and 350 SDL's and might be in the market for one soon. So I was wondering if someone can give me a quick tutorial on these. I know one is ofter referred to as the "rod bender" and it is advised to stay away from these. But I also saw some discussion about picking one up for cheap and replacing the engine with a 603? Also, if any other issues plague these that I should look out for. Thanks.

The 3.5l is a 603 also, the earlier 3.0l is the replacement.
Personally I like the idea if you can find a good short-block, using the newer head and distributor pump with the 3.0l seems like a robust setup.
