So what does this mean, the entire time you're on the road your front wheels go 2x the speed of the back ones?
I guess it means I should proofread my comments more carefullyier

240 D in decent condition gets about 35mpg at 60 mph, more with a tailwind. I have clocked as much as 40 across a several hundred miles of flat desert at that speed. When I fill up at the gas station and people ask I am sometimes inclined to tell them almost anything. So when you hear people saying "I heard about a guy that gets 75 mpg" It might have been me.

Really? My euro 84 300TD gets ~400 before the light comes on.

As an experiment, I have run melted butter in a fully warmed engine.

For safety and long shelf life, I would keep an unopened 35 pound container of Canola or Soy oil from one of the warehouse clubs and a full jug of power service.

Was that real butter or margarine?

If you are set up for SVO of WVO running into the closest market for a bottle of wesson oil would be a no brainer. I would be concerned about running more than a small amount of vegetable oil if I did not have the set up to pre heat it.

I have read so many horror stories about coking I think when I do do a conversion I will make it a point to do frequent tune-ups (Italian style)

I tried to prove my poor little 240D could, so I dropped into third gear and climbed a steep hill 10 miles long at 60 mph. Temp came up and I kept pushing.
I had never pushed the little car so hard. That was April and it is now October.
It never sounded so smooth or ran so well as after that ride. Now it is starting to sound like the taxi in Rodger Rabbit again, (it's "normal" sound) so perhaps I should look around for a hill to climb.

Yes, it was unsalted but it was past the expiration date.

If the vehicle was '85 or older, I would have no problem with veggie oil in an unmodified car IF THE ENGINE WAS ALLREADY UP TO TEMPERATURE and you dilute the veggie oil to at least 75% diesel/25% veggie oil and then run the engine for 5 minuts befor shutting down.

Exclamation

#2 heating oil is the same as diesel. My Dad had a 190D back in the 60's. He worked for the Federal gov. and had to travel a lot. He kept a 35 gal. drum in the trunk and went to a fuel depot that sold different fuels and bought the heating fuel, no road taxes, he just ran a hose from the trunk to the tank.

raslege,

U can use the oil engine oil for fuel enrichment. Just mix 1 qt. with 20 gallons og Diesel fuel. Probably beat to save it for the time that only ULSD is available. The oil will lubricate the injection pump. That's the only thing the ULSD will damage in the older Diesels.

I use my used engine oil as a fuel supplement.

you can also put a gallon of cooking oil in there too.

do you filter the used engine oil or depend on the existing fuel filters to do the job?
do you use that in the same ratio 1qt to 20 gal diesel?

right now we recycle our used engine oil.. but am always wondering about other uses...
how about throwing a few gallons into the house furnace oil tank?
