what can damage CCU

Hello,
Can anything damage a CCU?
I read somewhere that if the auxiliary
water pump goes bad it can destroy
the CCU. Is this true? Are there other
components that can destroy a
CCU(can I test them). I tested the
CCU last night and it is wide open.
So before I purchase a rebuilt this time,
I want to make sure it is not going to
get fried from another bad component.
Thanks
A
