as far as mityvacs go, how does this look?

I have been using the plastic MV for a few years now, and I think it's starting to "suck" in a bad way. everybody here says the metal one is the way to go.
is this an ok one?

or should I go for the name brand item for 70.00?

I say go for the real thing, and get the model that can do pressure as well as vacuum. I got the vacuum
only model and have regretted it ever since.

Want to buy my vacuum only Mityvac kit?

I've got the same one. I normally recommend HF stuff, since I think it is usually better than people give it credit for, but not in this case.

The brake bleed container did not seal well, I had to modify it to keep it from leaking. The rubber hose it came with was pre-deteriorated, and had to be replaced almost immediately. Then, after just a few uses, the release valve gummed up, and then the seal on the inside lost its ability to hold vacuum.

It was a huge piece of crap.

I have been using this one for a few years with no problems.

If your plastic Mityvac is "sucking", or leaking, I would think it would be from a sealing o-ring somewhere, and I bet the metal ones use the same sealing o-rings.
I have heard many folks here with plastic Mityvacs that have worked for a long time.
AND, you can't get a $50 dollar vac/pressure pump for $16 bucks....

I have been using the "plastic" econo-model for 20+ years. All I have ever had to do is clean and lubricate the internal rubber with silicone lubricant.

no, mine is not leaking, it is just difficult to use. the levers feel iffy.
I just figure a metal one will be better.
but it still works fine.

You want the Silverline 4050 kit... metal body, vacuum and pressure. I use this for boost pressure testing as well as vacuum testing:

I have it, and it works great. Paid $14 for it at HF. I've diagnosed several door lock issues with it so far.

The $14 unit won't do pressure... if you have a car with a turbo, don't waste your money on a vacuum-only tool. On a non-turbo car it would be ok though.
