I've got 2 used ones for sale. I'll take less than a new one.

Does that Febi oil look expensive now?

I agree with FI. Temporary installments of some hydraulic fluid may be ok for testing, or getting home etc..

Its not about rotting the spheres or lines either.

the viscosity is totally different and while it may help seal some things up b/c of this property, it may have been the cause of that chain failure of said car due to imposed stress on the chain.

the gear for the hydr. pump was not intended for increased duty by the pump. This is evident in removing the pump and looking at the cheesy little knub that spins the pump and the bearing that the gear rolls on. Its placement on the intermediate length of chain b/w IP gear and cam gear is another red flag that stressing this pump is very bad idea

I haven't seen any visible difference in viscosity between the Febi fluid and power steering fluid.

What's the reason for thinking that other fluids will cause damage? I suspect there are tons of TD's around the world running on different fluids.

Anyone know what kinds of fluids are in Citroens?

zh-m is the criteria. There is brand specified for them on shelf. It is the same criteria as febi. There are other fluids that meet the criteria - just not yer av'age 'ol hydro sauce.

..but if you think Febi is expensive, it gets worse.

viscosity is more than looks, it is behavior at high/low temps - a characteristic you cannot see.

But I agree.. my car came with trans fluid in the res. and it worked great!!

isnt that the stuff at Autozone / other chains in the big bucket. I went to every chain lookin at their hydr. fluids and finding whatever specs I could. Little info.

Talked to some people and found 2 classes: "it is too thick, and performance / ride quality will suffer"

"..some stuff will eat your rubber"

that pump is fragile, when you load something like that which is known to leak, it is sure to stress those old-a$$ seals. Thicker fluid = higher pressure and increased stress. This is now being transferred to a mere idler pulley on a polished journal...

What about in winter/fall when it gets cold at night? Put that hydro sauce in your fridge over night next to a a sample of zh-m. Then pour them simultaneously. That would make an awesome science project.

You ever priced tractor parts??? I'm not too worried about the SLS running tractor fluids.

He beat me to it by 10 minutes!
They crushed that wagon with a whole bunch of good parts, including a 4 speed manual with 300D flywheel. I got front seats, sunvisors and a wagon triangle at least out of that Euro wagon. Oh, and I have the floormats stored too.
A very nice forum member sold me a hydraulic pump for $50 bucks a couple years ago. Don't look at those sticker prices Dave.
