Question Transmission Shop Manual?

Where can one find a shop manual dealing with the trannies on the W123's? I have the FSM on CDROM and I can't find hardly anything dealing with the transmission. I'm looking for adjustment specifications for the vacuum modulator pressure, but also want the whole manual if it's out there.

Thanks!

The modulating pressure for a 722.315 transmission (with transmission at operating temperature of 80 deg C. & vacuum line disconnected) in drive at 50 km/h is 2.9 bar (if the revised pressure transducer is installed 3.3 bar). Working pressure 12.5 +/- 1.0 bar (14.3 +/- 1.0 with revised transducer). Governor pressure should be 1.2 bar at 30 km/h and 2.8 at 90 km/h with either transducer. All of those values are the same for a 722.303 transmission too except the working pressure at 50 km/h with a revised transducer which is a tad higher at 14.7 +/- 1.0 bar.
Found this in my notes. I believe you have the 722.303 in the two 123's you have in your sig. I have the transmission manual on microfiche, but, alas, no way to print it. Anyone out there with a good microfiche printer? PM me.

Yeah the FSM has nothing on these transmissions. The shop that services all the company equipment where my dad works surpisingly has some program that has them! They have every single FSM/TSB for every MB! And everything MB has on the transmissions. I have no idea what its called, its some service they subscribe to that has everything for everything.

If you know someone that owns a big shop they can probably get them.

Here's a site that is selling a manual for overhauling Mercedes 722.3 and 722.4 transmission.
http://www.storesonline.com/site/573683/product/83-722-3-4-TM
I have no idea if the book it any good. I found it somehow a while back and kind of forgot about it. If someone buys one let us know how the manual is.

Thanks for the info. I wish the trans manual came with the FSM.

jbaj007, what exactly do those specs mean? Are there three points on the transmission that can be tested? Modulator Pressure, Working Pressure, and Governor Pressure are three different locations to measure hydraulic pressure?

I've set the vacuum leakoff valve to about 4.5 inHg using the 10mm spool piece and have a range of about 12 to 0, but still have a really harsh 3-4 shift and pretty hard between the rest when driving normally. I probably should verify the hydraulic pressure first, then play with the vacuum profile relative to throttle.

biobenz,

Im thinking you probably need to adjust your modulator. There is a test port in front of the modulator that takes I think an M8 hollow screw. I have seen a procedure for adjusting this, I will have to find it.

I need to do the exact same thing this weekend.

I think RLeo was hosting it on his site about a month ago. You might do a search and see.

I have that manual and found it to be marginal compared to another one I picked up via a posted link on this forum (can't remember where but it uses a '96 C class as the sample 722.3xx teardown and rebuild).

The ATSG pictures aren't that good and the language is sometimes cryptic.

biobenz,
This is worth reading: http://articles.mbz.org/transmission/adjust/

I have a scan of the ATSG page roughly showing the test ports. Not great, but worth a look. Too big for this site's email service, so PM me your email and I'll send it as attachment to you.

I have a copy. I agree with this conclusion. It also doesn't have any theory of operation, so don't expect anything like that in it.

Andrew, you're welcome to take a look at my copy next time your up here in Portland.

Thanks again for the help. That is enough to test and adjust what I can do myself. I found a website that explains the theory if anyone is interested. It is actually for Toyotas, but a lot of it is probably applicable to ours. It is at www.autoshop101.com under the technical articles menu.
