my diesel is too quiet

I just picked up an 87 300TD . It's so quite compared to my 84 190D. I thought both these cars had the engine encapsulation that reduced diesel noise. But the 190 rattles pretty loud and the 300 is almost as quite & smooth as my friend's Infinity.

It's hard to believe they are that different. Both are the newer aluminum head type engines. But the 300 is a Six with turbo while the 190 is a Four NA.

I guess the encapsulation is just much better with the 300s. Even with the hood up it's pretty damn quite.

Driving it home I was kinda woudering if I got bait & switched with a gasser

Remove the muffler.

The W124 probably has more sound-deadening material because it was a more upscale car. I know there is a lot more insulation in a W123 300D than a 240D.

Stop running biodiesel in it.

If you're not running biodiesel in it, you should hear how quiet it is with biodiesel!

Here's to quieter

I'm envious. I have sat in about an hour and a half of standstill traffic today and even though I just adjusted my valves, my car was sounding awfully loud. I can't wait to get my W124 with the OM603.961 in it. This summer for sure.

I knew the newer, post 123 series cars were quieter. But I had no idea how quiet. It's quiter than my 4.0 EFI Jeep.

I drove a 1986 300D with what I assume is the same engine & encapsulation about 2 months ago and it was not this quiet.

I wounder if the lack of Turbo on the 190 makes that much a difference?

turbos are indeed very efficient noise cancellation devices.
compare a 240 or 300 N/A to a post 82 Turbo'd one!

The noise level can vary with condition of the injectors, injection timing, valve lifters, and a number of other things. The noise encapsulation doesn't do a whole lot (it helps though). If your 190 is a lot louder than the 300, something isn't right.

Yeah, they shouldn't be that much louder. The 603 will be a bit smoother because its an I6 and they are naturaly balanced. Unlike I4's.

the 602 2.5T 5cyl has the sweetest ol skool idle growl, though smooth.. the 603 3.0T 6cyl is just an all 'round beast.

Comparing my '87 190D turbo to my '87 300D turbo, pretty close. The 300D was perceptibly quieter, but both were well within drive-through ordering levels.

I'll never understand why Dodge leaves those cummins so noisy, sounds more like a farm tractor than a civilized vehicle. My Caterpillar engines have all had sound-deadening bolted to the block and oil pan, much quieter than a Dodge pickup. Diesels should be envied, not obnoxious.

LOL, apparently you don't understand the american pick-up truck market, it's all about "obnoxious," with bonus points for lots of black smoke. Someone needs to tell these guys about viagra.

I was waiting for a muffler to be installed on my old car a while back. One of the other customers went out to his truck after paying and started it up - it was so loud, dust was literally being shaken from the ceiling tiles. He switched off the engine, walked back into the shop and said to the person behind the counter:
Quote:
Can you make it louder?

The new Cummins powered Dodges with common-rail injection aren't nearly as bad-I've been told that the high output VP44/24 valve motors (like my '02) are the loudest of them all, I personally don't mind the noise that much, it quiets down quite a bit when it heats up-but it is a loud s.o.b. in the winter on a cold morning!
