Those darn little (expensive) Auxiliary Water Pumps!..(85,87 300D)

Whats the Lifespan of an Auxiliary Water Pump?
My 87 300D auxiliary water pump failed at 220K. I think my 85 300D aux water pump is dying at 350K; its starting to leak...
Boy those rotten little suckers cost an arm and a leg..about $180.
How do they fail? I think mine is leaking; but on my 87 300D it just stopped working, period.
That would be $360 of aux water pumps in one year! You could buy an engine for as much!
Maybe I will run my heater off a tee in to the main water pump

Wink

the aux water pumps main function is to assist in providing full coolant flow to the cabin when the car is idling.especially critical if your stuck in rush hour traffic a lot in cooler climes.it may not be all that necessary in other applications

It hardly seems out of line to me that such an item would fail at such mileage and after so many years. If you were averaging $360 per year for them, year after year, then that would be a problem. Looking at repair costs over any one small period of time, as opposed to over the expected time and/or miles of ownership? That way madness lies.

If you're really trying to conserve cash, you could look for a pull from a boneyard. Or, you could search eBay for the same - there's a used one up for auction now. I don't know if it's an exact match for yours.

It depends on how important the pump is to you, how much money you're willing to risk on a used one, and most imortantly, how you value your time.

The aux. pump on my 300D was unplugged when I bought it, and I haven't seen fit to change that yet.

Be careful you don't leave those plugged in if they are failing. If the motor or impeller seizes it can cause a power drain that will fry your CCU. Don't ask me how I know. Mine only lasted 135K miles so you are doing well. You can do without it but it's nice to have if you do much city driving. As eskimo mentioned, you see these on EBay all the time. That's where I got my replacement.

IMHO if your going to replace this part go with a new pump.no guarantees of life expectancy with a used part

Heck, i just ran a bypass hose (2$) till I can afford a used one.
And I have great heat now.

I've run 123 and 124 cars a total of right at one million miles and I've never lost an aux pump. Maybe my frequent cooling system flush and fresh anti freeze has saved them.

On the 124 car, if the aux pump is drawing more than 1.3 Amps it will indeed take out the CCU which costs more than the pump, so see that you have a good pump.

Merry Christmas,

Merry Christmas,

Is there actually no heat at all if idling in traffic a minute or so? Sounds like everytime an aux pump fails, you have to buy a CCU as well!

If there is a minimal heat loss, while stopped at a light, I don't care! I'd rather bypass and disconnect the thing if it's going to pose a threat to the CCU! BB Oh, one more question, 1 mil, how many trips to the moon and back is that?

You probably won't notice it much if the ambient temp is not very cold. At higher rpm the system can get by without a pump but it can take longer for you to feel heat when the car warms up. If you drive stop and go to get to work on freezing days you'll probably want the pump to work.

By my estimation Larry's made about the equivalent of two round trips, just enough to keep him competitive with some of his neighbors at Johnson Space Center.

Just measure how much current it draws when the engine's running, then wire in a fuse in series with the pump (for slightly more amps than the normal draw). I think I got a 12V 1.5A fuse plus inline holder---less than $5 at Radio Shack. The wiring is obvious, since there's just two wires going to the pump. That way, if the pump seizes, the fuse will blow and protect the CCU.

i dont understand why ppl want to chance it. Im for saving $ and all, but this thing actually working (pumping) is only 1/10th of the worry. If it leaks - which is very possible on old, brittle plastic, you can kill your whole engine. if it breaks and leaks all the coolant quickly, you will definitely kill your whole engine. the 124's run pretty hot in the summer. for $140 (price I paid off here), it seems like a no brainer. Save $ on headlight wiper inserts or something less critical.

Car, they are eary to fix. Look for my thread on this. Basically, open it up and clean it. Let me know if you can't find my thread. I'll help you find it. I have overhauled 2 already and they are a poc. They tend to seize due to corrosion and dirt build up inside them.

Here it is: it was also posted in DIY link by whunter.

Fixed Auxiliary Water Pump!!
