If I replace the fuel sender on my 83 300D turbo can I expect more reliability? I have tried cleaning it that helped some. I need to do something my wife ran out of diesel and was not happy. Oh yea, while on that subject, can the trip meter/odometer be cleaned and lubed. I believe she ran out of fuel because the trip meter hung up. she has been using it as a fuel gauge since the one in the dash is not reliable. If it can what would be the best lube. I would think something that would dry so as not to pick up dust. Any help would as always be greatly appreciated.

Replacing the sender should give you "new" reliability. Getting the odometer fixed properly at a speedometer shop is about $80. Not a good candidate for DIY, unless you have experience and lots of patience. I carry a gallon of Diesel fuel in the trunk just in case.

When you have your inst. cluster out, it may be a good idea to pour a little liquid graphite down the speedo cable housing. I've cleaned and lubed the mileage tickers on these speedos, and it does require some patience. While you're in there, use Q-tips and a mild cleaner to bring the 0 thru 9 numbers back to life...

Thanks Zoonhollis that is excactly what I needed to know on the instrument panel. Your right the numbers are real dull. I assume you were talking about a mild soap and not a solvent.

Yes, a mild soap. I learned the hard way that a solvent is no good on any of the interior nomenclature...unless your aim is to completely remove it!
