Worn Ignition Switch Question - 124

I have one 124 with a very difficult ignition switch. The keys are very worn, and they often slide in wrong or won't turn the ignition switch without some wiggling.

I'm thinking of buying a new key, to see if the key is at least most of the problem. The key is visibly worn, so may be.

On the other hand, if it is the ignition switch, not the key, I'd hate to spend the $50 or so for a new key, since I'd be replacing the ignition anyway.

Has anyone here had experience with an old key and new key, whether this might fix my problem? I'm concerned that if the keys are this worn, so also might be the locks.

This may seem like an idiot reply, but the next time it gives you trouble, get the steering wheel where it is not pushing against the lock.

This is from my 123, so it may not apply, but when you take the key out of the ignition, there is a steering wheel lock that keeps you from turning the wheel more than a half turn. If you take the key out and then let go of the wheel, it can turn and push against the limit of the steering lock, which in turn makes it practically impossible to turn the key when you come back to the car.

Hope this helps - it may be the problem.

a stupid idea
flip the key over
they work both ways
but some ware more on a over used side

btw my dealer charged $20 FOR THE NEW KEY PLUS 7.50 SHIPPING
SO GET A REAL STEEL KEY NOT A SOFT BRASS COPY

AND YES THE NEW KEY FIXED THE HARD TO TURN PROBLEM
BUT THEN SO DID FLIPPING THE OLD KEY TO USE THE LESS WOREN SIDE

I changed the ignition lock to fix mine

I bought a key/ignition lock combo. on ebay for mine, about $35. Only drawback is you now have a different key for the ignition and door. Once you get the hang of the coathanger tool it will only take about 10min. to change. I don't know how to check the ignition switch, wish I did, you have helped me in the past.

I'd consider the lock replacement, but if it's the key that would be easier and I'd like the locks to match (and match the VIN keying) Can you buy a new ignition lock to match the original keying?

Anyone have a good source for an OE key?

don't get an aftermarket lock and key. they suck and when you loose the key or if it breaks you are ****ed because you can't get a new key at the dealer

When my car got broken into last fall, the idiot screwed up the passenger door lock. After failing to unlock the car, they broke the rear passenger side window. The insurance paid for the busted window and the lock. The shop had me order a VIN-matched lock from MB Germany at the dealer. It came with a new key that works in all the locks. It cost quite a bit more than a new not matched lock, but the insurance was paying so it didn't really matter.

Thanks Henry.
I have one in my parts '87, works well, but if I did that I'd transplant all of the locks so that they all match. Then the key wouldn't match the VIN, for some reason I don't want that (don't ask).

I believe that Dale's post is what I wanted to hear, sounds like I can order a new key, and if it doesn't work to my satisfaction I will order a new ignitioin lock to match the key/VIN.
