rear brake reservoir which cannot be checked from the outside

glazed pads or non flat/smooth rotors could cause it.

also what booster is it? different brand behave differently. girling ate and bendix have different "power?" curves based on applied pressure. Its in the fsm somewhere. if they arent the same boosters you are comparing apples and oranges. 2 of the brands have the same curve i forget which ones.

I agree that it is a long shot, but thin pads combined with thin beyond spec rotors, could cause the caliper piston to extend beyond normal travel, and who knows? just throwing out ideas to check. I like the idea of the rear resivoir checking too.
more than likely, there is a booster problem though. even glazed pads at low speeds should not result in hard pedal.

Replaced the front brake pads and solved the problem. They were quite worn. Perhaps an 1/8" left on the thinnest one.

how did the rotors look? that much wear on the pads, may have worn the rotor too. be sure and measure it's thickness and be sure it's within tolerances.

Rotors looked fine so I didn't check them. Only 77k miles on the car.
