1980 300D Speedometer

Confusing...........I have a 1980 300D with a 0-115 mph speedometer in it.............the speedometer is indicating the the correct speed when driving...........the odometer is inop..........when checking the other thread posts I see that some folks have a 0-85 mph meter in their 1980 300Ds and in my owners manual on page 11 it shows a 0-125 mph meter.........what gives?.......and is the gearing in the 0-115 and the 0-85 meters different or is it the same..........do they both use the same send unit or a different geared one?..........

I used these instructions and repaired my odometer..

...it's on my '81 240D.. 85 mph speedometer-- correct though..

As to the 120 mph thing..

The 'speed' at the gauge end of all the cables is the same-- the part that connects to the rear end determines how fast it spins.. So if it's accurate, you could put another speedometer in, and it too, would be accurate.

My motorcycle is German. (BMW) we've identified 5 different speedometers for it-- for different markets.

...I'm wondering if you don't have one that was originally in Canada, or it's from an older one.. US built cars in the '80's had 85 mph speedometers, and some where during that time, had 55 'labeled differently..'

Of course, the speed was limited at that time to 55 or less EVERYWHERE..

If you're old enough, you know the song... "I can't drive-- 55!!!"

if not, ask your parents!

Did I mention I'm of German Heritage??

They should be the same, I wouldn't worry about it. I maybe wrong, but I think there was a mid-year change over on speedometers in 1980 that went to the 85 mph. Your 115 mph should be correct. Just fix your odometer and you should be good to go.
