Turn signal mechanism-SOS-state inspection failure!

1985 190D state of maryland inspection; failed on the turn signal mechanism. making a right turn or left with turn signals on when the steering wheel returns it does not shut off the turn signal! i failed. help with name of part or easy to fix by diy, location of part in steering column? Thanks

Thanks all, we now have a plan for inspection and the signal cancelation switch! Gmanatee

Wow, some inspection places are too damn strict. Here they just flip the thing back and forth to see if they light.

BTT for ya.

Thumbs down "Self cancel" is the term by the state of maryland

"self cancel" of the turn signal is the term for my inspection failure!

Arrow MD is a pain with their speed limits as well.....

I am originally from the Eastern Shore......and I moved up here in West Virginia.....I don't have easy access to all of the social life that y'all have, but I don't have to worry about a buncha chicken $**t either.....

We have an annual inspection here as well, but I doubt that anyone would flunk for that.....hell my pickup passed with a crack in the windshield, I was prepared to have it replaced, but the inspector said "it's not interfering with your view".....so it appears good unless the crack runs into the drivers line of sight.....

I'm bidding on a switch on Fleabay right now. Mine would turn the wipers on if you tried turning on the left blinker. Too weird to figure out.

The " FREE State" has a vehicle inspection ONLY at the time of resale. We have emmission inspections on a semi annual basis, but the whole vehicle is inspected only before it can be registered. A lot depends on the inspector. You might want to visit, or call another inspection station and see if the self cancel is a requirement, or if it falls under " inspector's judgment"
As for the repair, the turn signal mechanism is located under the steering wheeel, so it usually has to be removed. Be careful around the air bag. Disconnect the battery before doing anything else.

Here's a tip for you, if you are handy with tools and want to do your own repair..... You are close to a U Pull IT yard. There is a Crazy Ray's in Mt Airy, MD. For a $1 entry fee you can take your tools and wander the yard. If you see a correct model car, you can remove the steering wheel and see how difficult it is to get out the switch. Even if you happen to break the switch in the donor car, you are out nothing more than your time and the $1. You will have gained some valuable experience--you might have ruined a part that someone else could have used--but too bad.
You can certainly know whether this is a repair for you to do. After trying your hand at Crazy Ray's you might decide to order the part from our sponsor, Phil at Fastlane. I use a lot of used/junkyard parts, but electrical items are often best "new".
Someone here, or up in the tech forum should be able to give you a step-by step set of instructions. I can't; my knowledge is limited to W123 and W126 models.

To pull the wheel, you'll need to get a 10mm allen headed socket. Mine was on there pretty tight, had to use a 1/2 inch drive ratchet with the 3/8 drive reducer. Mark the location of the wheel socket and the splines on the shaft, or it'll be a little off center when you put the wheel back on. Not too difficult of repair.
