Mike,

In case U are confused, the rear brakes are a combination of disc and drum brakes: Drum for the parking brake and disc for the service brakes.

mike,

Its possible that the parking brake linings came off the shoes. I have seen this happen.

U might have to replace the parking brake shoes.

At least on the W126 you should never have to adjust the cables.

The parking brake is just a drum brake with one of those star things you adjust with a screw driver to move the shoes out a bit.

Do the e-brakes release slowly, or just the e-brake pedal? There is a return spring on the e-brake pedal as well.

It should pop right off as soon as you pull the release.

There is a spring on the pedal assembly itself...sometimes those brake. I have even repaired this with a couple of heavy duty elastics (rubber bands) around the pedal arm which serve the same purpose as that spring. If they break, just replace them.

And, yes, the others are giving you good information, adjust the e-brake at the wheels. They will often wear down to the point that the pedal does nothing. You should not have to touch the cables, just adjust the shoes. It can be done in 15 minutes once you know what you are doing. You only have to remove one lug bolt and rotate the wheel so the hole is at the 10:00-11:00 position (45 degrees) and use a screwdriver to spin the star wheel. You adjust them in opposite directions but I never remember which is which, I usually just set the brake pedal to just before it "takes hold" and start turning the star wheel...with the brake pedal set like that you will know very soon if you are going the right way or not. Once you determine the direction, then release the pedal and adjust as instructed previously. The correct spec is for the pedal to go 2-3 detents before fully engaging and stopping.

A lot of times the shoes are gone so its probably a good idea to remove the disc and see what's left.

Came across this thread by chance, I just did the parking brakes on my W124 and thought this information I posted might be useful to anyone attempting to do the same since there is probably a lot in common with other MB's.

Parking Brake Shoe Replacement: Drum will not budge

Good luck.
