I guess I'd rather blind the people behind me than get rear ended. Peoples retina's re-adjust, smashed up cars don't. Its really not "too bright" though. Its not so intense that you'd look away, but there's plenty enough light to get someone's attention.

My dad's S70 has one of those red LED bars at the top of the rear window. It's pretty bright, and it definitely gets your attention. And I would think it would be DOT legal for Volvo to be able to import it. It's an improvement over the previous Volvo he had, an 850. It had the 124 style third brake light at the base of the rear window.

Looks good. I've been meaning to hit the junk yard to find a few third brake lights to fit in my W123s.

When I am distracted/blinded by illegal headlamps or taillamps, it makes me want to get away from them, not follow. Better make sure they have DOT approval also, or a ticket might be in your future.

I take my cues from encountering many high-beam drivers in the past few years. If you're in front of them, you can flash your lights, tap your brakes, signal to them in any way possible, and likely they'll never notice. You can't fix stupid and the people who tailgate or drive with squirrel-spotter headlamps are completely unaware of thier surroundings and the possible result of their driving style.

So, install a CHMSL if you want, but keep it within reasonable and legal light output, someone has to sit behind you at a stoplight. Don't be like the many Infinity and Oldsmobile drivers out there who can't find the off switch to their really cool rear fog lamps.
Get in front of me? Regardless of what it takes? Uh..Oh... that right there is not safe at all.

I don't know about your car, but on my car the brake light is NOT ALWAYS ON. The brake light only turns on whenever I step on the brake pedal to notify the driver behind me and to call his or her attention, in case he is not at all paying attention, that I am slowing down and about to stop and when ever the car is in a complete stop.

Like I've said, as long as it's purpose reasonably safe and just enough to warn the driver behind it is an added safety feature. I don't think somebody out there is insane and stupid enough to put Xenon or HID brake lights. I believe, older MB owners are 10x smarter than any other car owners out there.

Also remember that brake lights should also be bright enough to be visible whenever the sunlight is shining against the brake light lenses at daytime. We are not only talking about night time driving here, try driving at times just before sunset heading eastward and you'll know what I'm talking about.

It looks like ass--not a pretty one, mind you-- one with acne, stretch marks and maybe even hair on it.

One's perception of safety is often more important than true safety, but in this case-- I'd risk my life before I rode in an automobile fitted with Taiwanese junk tacked to the roof.

Did I mention that it looks like ass yet?

I'm entitled to my opinion and the voicing of it.

It's great that you've billed yourself as a 'professional smart ass,' but can't take another of the same mold.

You like neons, I wonder how many parts on those are Taiwanese?

In my opinion it looks quite good, and provides additional safety.

I'm curious if the red light floods the passenger compartment, and if not how did you manage it?

At night it shines on the rear deck a little, but unless you're actually looking for it, you never see it/can tell, its very minor because the lens on the LED unit is highly focused to beam it out of the window with little light loss. Little to no light inside the car.

Looks pretty good. Missing that third brake light definitly hurts older cars.

When you nail the brake's on the new S the rear lights actualy flash. Movement and flashing lights attract our attention, its human nature.

Now flashing rear brakes would be an interesting mod.
