'79 240D -- Engine refuses to wind up

My '79 240D has 230K miles on it and has run perfectly for many years. Recently and gradually over the past several weeks, the car's ability to start moving from a dead stop has gotten worse and worse. The degree varies, but sometimes the tranny will be fully engaged as I leave a stop light and I've got the pedal floored and I get very few rpm as I crawl across the intersection and for approx. 100 yards before it finally starts to get a head of steam going. If I happen to be on an uphill slope -- forget about it!!!! The problem is worse (atrocious) when the engine is cold. Sometimes I can floor the accelerator with the clutch engaged and it takes forever for the rpm to climb. Once I get rpm, it will hold speed (25mph in 2nd gear, 40 mph in 3rd and 75mph in 4th) without a problem.

I would really appreciate your help,
Bob

Ps. I recently had the fuel lines linking the diesel tank with the motor replaced due to leakage at the tank connection.

have you changed filters lately?

have you treated your tank with biocide lately?

i would try these things if you have not already.

it sounds like you have either got a linkage problem with your accelerator, or you have a lack of fuel due to (hopefully) filters, or a plugged tank screen. possibly even a plugged vent in the tank. of course, it could also be the IP, or Injectors. but test the simple stuff first.
when you step on the pedal, does your IP linkage move full travel?
next, can you see through the clear prefilter?
