I think we should move this thread over to http://www.cyclingforums.com/ and I think some of the guys over there are going to disagree with you on that point. If you see a pack of guys with neon jerseys and shaved legs coming your way..... Play dead! you cant out-run them!!!

LOL, I could see that coming. I'm a long way from a serious cyclist (I mostly ride with my kids these days), but even I wouldn't put lights on a bike unless I was really going to ride at night. As I recall, I removed and threw away all the plastic reflectors before I even rode my bike the first time, that probably saved 3 ounces. Real cyclist will pay $100 extra to save a fraction of a pound, and that's not even on their racers.

To me that seems illogical, but I guess I will lost that fight no matter what. Anyway, we should stop bickering about bicycles and start bickering about cars. Forum visitors might get confuzzled

^^^^^^That would be true. I have seen cyclists at their absolute worst, many times in the "Critical Mass" rides in San Francisco, where thousands of them have literally comandeered the streets, Market St. especially, for hours at a time, and woe betide anyone who got in their way. Just last month some poor hapless woman got trapped in an intersection when they came through and they trashed her minivan, flung their bikes through her window,
terrorized her small children inside, and the SFPD could do nothing, overwhelmed by sheer numbers. I personally saw them swarm an Olds Cutlass in an intersection on Market St once, it was simply mob violence.

I have been mowed down by cyclists while walking on the sidewalk in SF, seen them kick and damage automobiles they thought had annoyed them, zoom through red lights, do endless figure 8s in intersections so as not to put their feet down and stop at a light, and unfortunately, pull into the middle of traffic and get killed by Muni buses and garbage trucks too. An incredible sense of "entitlement" from what columnist Jon Carroll said a bunch of people dressed "like aliens from an underfunded planet"

but......There is plenty of blame to go around for sure, the SF car drivers are the worst, speeding, inattentive, gabbing on cell phones, running red lights, whipping around corners when the light is red, flinging their doors open into traffic and into the path of cyclists, and generally making their life hell.

Sorry about the hijack of thread about city lights.

But I am touchy about this.

I personally don't believe that a large car, drivng down a country road, on a clear summer day, is less visible than that same car with resistor-dimmed headlamps (DRLs) coming down that same road. Yes, visibility can be enhanced by lights in less than optimum weather and lighting, but the law requires lights on then anyway.

I have friends who will disagree with me, and friends who agree with me. All still friends.

Statistics show that DRLs reduce accident rates? Likely so. However, likely due largely to the fact that less people can drive around in poor weather or dusk or following sun, ... without lights.

I'll run my lights (front AND rear) when conditions dictate and per the law. If you like DRLs so much, why not just turn on your lights? Apparently I don't get why that is such an inconvenience. Soon someone will introduce a bill to make rain-sensor wipers a requirement so that people who don't turn on their wipers will have them automatically actuate.

IMHO, even the safest car in the world will be no good if it is driven by the most "dumb-ass and reckless driver" Airbags, ABS, traction, stability...blahblahblah will not serve any good purpose.

Yes, but what do you suggest we do about that?

Taking the warning labels off of everything will take care of the stupid people, but what about the stupid drivers...

How about we replace all the stop signs with yield signs, get rid of rumble strips and those bump reflectors between lanes, and pull all the dead end signs and road blocks. That should take care of the problem.

That would be a good start, and how about we get rid of speed limits too...

Maybe only well-trained people should be allowed to drive. People should be tested on their driving skill as well as their knowledge of signs and protocol.
...oh wait. Nevermind.

Reading that kinda made me chuckle because believe it or not, I'm a freshman in high school with a learner's permit... At least I actually read the stuff I'm supposed to read, most people don't.

For the record, there are school buses being delivered to the Beaumont School District equipped with seat belts.

Here in Friendswood there are only a few, and those are the special short buses, and we get around 6 new buses every year...
