Hubcap question:

I have some ugly bundt cake rims on my 300cd right now with new tires. I'm thinking of buying these european 14 inch hubcaps. I don't have experience with rims and tires other than adding air to them. What sort of 14 inch steel wheels would take these hubcaps, and the tires from my 300cd? The tires are the standard size for the bundt rims. If I can make get these hubcaps and some steelies, the next thing to get is the french european headlights with yellow fogs .

Like theDon said, any 14" MB steel wheels should work. I prefer the color matched wheel covers though.

When you go looking for some wheels to put hubcaps on get the aluminum ones.

The alloy wheels that accept the hubcaps are fairly rare though so don't get too disappointed if you can't find them.

Yesterday i changed on the wagon the 15" steelies it had to a set of alloys 14". the weight differential is enormous already.

15" steelies with cover+ 185/75 tires 20.2 kg
14" alloy bund cake+ 185/75 tires 13.6 kg
14" alloy bund cake+ 205/65 tires 14.1 kg

I would think that on a 240 you would want steel rims. They would act like flywheels and would carry you over the next hill.

Those are the plastic, bottom of the line, budget conscious euro Mercedes hubcaps, seen on some of the W126 euro models, that you are looking at there. The US spec 126ers never had those.

Your car would be much nicer looking with the W123 metal hubcaps matched to your car's exterior color, they look nicer than the bundt wheels, and are lots easier to keep clean too, and easier to find replacements for than the plastic ones.

and i have four steelies. they weigh about 14# each. a bundt weighs about 13.4. the aluminum wheels from the 83 240s i have not weighed but i estimate maybe as little as 10#. they are especially sweet on a 240 but they do bend easily.

i rather like the looks of the plastic covers the op showed.

i have a selection of original equipment steel wheel covers with the painted centers too.

see parts.

Hi, excuse my naïvete in advance - I just purchased a 1985 380 SL and up until now I have driven an alarmingly large selection of old Citroëns so my M-B knowledge is very limited. My car has Mercedes-Benz 11 spoke 16" Alloys from a 2000 E-Class / 210 chassis with almost new Continental Tires. Being obsessed with originality, I want to replace these with either 14" Bundt wheels (not Chrome) or Steel wheels with painted metal Hubcaps as on the earlier 107s etc. Anyway, already too long story short, I am interested in your alloys if they are this type, or if anyone is interested in trade I am open to offers as I won't have any use for the 210 type. Tires are almost new and alloys are absolutely perfect. Thanks!

Hi Pallas,

For originality, on the'85 380 SL, you'll want the bundt wheels (not chromed) as the steelies with hubcaps, while they look good, were more commonly seen on the '72 and '73 R107 models. They should be pretty easy to find at your local pick'n'pull or junkyard

(I assume you are related to DS21 Pallas of the Citroen family!). I had the good luck to be in Copenhagen one night, on July 14,(Bastille day) when the local Citroen club apparently decided to have a parade, a huge line of DS19, DS21, Traction avant, and other cars, flying HUGE Tricolors, came by in the twilight, it was awesome.
