That's a pretty cool invention! I'd use it to fill up my mower. (If I had a ATV or a Snowmobile, I might use it for those too)
Now...if they could have it filter down to 1 micron, I'd use it to filter oil....But I believe the guy in the demo movie said 74 micron.

Watching the video (demo) really helps!

The video is compelling but my Spidey sense says there's an as seen on TV factor to consider.

I understand water-permeable and oil-permeable membranes being able to block some material while passing others through. But this guy's device/website insists on saying "screen" over and over. It's unclear to me how any kind of screen is going to filter out a water molecule, even if it's free water.

Cheers, John

I bought an identical product from West Marine. They have different sizes available. I'm no engineer, but the instructions tell you that if the fuel has been mixed with alcohol or something to keep the water in suspension, the funnel will not be effective in removing the water. To clean debris and the like from the screen the directions call for it to be rinsed in gasoline.

I used the funnel just a couple of times, certainly not enough to offer an opinion on its effectivness

Even lower tech than that. It is a basin with the opening at the top. The water collects at the bottom of the basin. When you are done filling you 'dispose' of the water and remaining fuel.

Just my guess.

Your guess is correct.

Here's the link to the West Marine version along with the description of how it works:

OK, now I am confused. I said it was a cup with a stand-pipe. The water went to the bottom, the fuel floats on top and goes into the stand-pipe.

You agreed with me and then put up a link to West Marine.

The link you put up says "Teflon-coated, stainless-steel filter separates water and dirt from gasoline, diesel and kerosene fuels. " This sounds like the coellessing (sp) filter material I saw on a tour of Kaydon Filtration. It is teflon coated mesh. The high surface tension of water keeps it from flowing through the mesh. Oil has low surface tension and flows right through.

Or is it a combination of both?

It is a combination of both, as the screen does not extend to the bottom of the funnel's bowl.

It does not separate water from veggie oil and it is also less effective on biodiesel than it is on petro diesel.
