Never change it, if you do you suck!

FYI I dump mine every 3k, but I may extend that a bit since Delvac 1 is expensive and 603's don't add that much soot. For the first 100 miles or so the oil actualy stays perfectly clear.

Anyone use bypass filtering like the TP filter or run a centrifuge to extend oil change intervals? Do these two methods remove soot or only the heavy metals?

If not, then why do you feel it is safe to extend the change another 2K miles if soot is your concern?
The test comparisons would be identical. The soot in conventional oil over 5K miles is the same as the soot in a synthetic over the same 5K miles.

Whether the synthetic can hold the soot in suspension better than the conventional oil is the proverbial question.

Personally, I run Rotella-syn. It's a cheap group III synthetic and it "seems" to do fine over 6K intervals. The soot remains slightly below 1% over this interval although the viscosity increases to the upper level of the band.

I don't run the better Mobil-1 due to the soot issue. If you are going to change a synthetic between 5K and 6K, it doesn't make much sense to pay for an oil that is good for 10K.

I run Rotella T synthetic, Mobil 1 5W-40 or Mobil Delvac 1 synthetic year around. The Mobil synthetic oil is better than the Rotella but the Rotella is still FAR BETTER than any oil that was available back in the early '80s.

I use the Fram oil filter because it seems to have the best quality of all of the oil filters that fit the 616/617 engines. The Fram filter for these engines seems to be an unusually good filter from Fram. I won't use any other Fram filters.
