If it isn't a simple linkage problem, it sounds like you have absolutely no pressure being developed by the front pump

I would suspect that the torque converter or front pump is knackered. My 80 300SD came to me that way ( cheaply). The slender fingers of the TC had sheared off and wrecked the front pump. If I were you, I would remove one of the ATF cooling lines from the bottom of the radiator, start the car, engage reverse and see if you have any pressure. My guess is that you won't have any. I fixed mine by cannabalizing a 722.112 tranny from a 77 280S. Car works just fine now.

The design of that TC is weak in that regard. They beefed up the fingers on the 722.3xx .

79 tranny prob

maybe a dumb question but would that entail removing the tranny or is it in front of the engine?

no..ATF cooling lines go to the radiator. Disconnect there and have something to catch the fluid. Have another person do this with you.

as was said above, the test is easily done with 17 or 19mm wrenches at the radiator. Fixing the problem I described above will require removal of the transmission and most likely a new torque converter and/or front pump.
