New paintjob, Finally (big pics)

I finally got my '78 240 painted last night. Brought it home around 11 last night, and then cut and buffed the paint this afternoon. The lower panels and roof still need buffing, and it needs a lot of parts put back on, but I just love the way it looks. The emblems were filled in and I shaved the antenna. Other than that it's pretty much original. The hubcaps were being painted (black inserts) so not shown in the pics, but there on now.

I would be interested in what you did in preparation and the neighborhood of the costs you incurred. Interested in repainting my 300d, but I have no idea what to expect to do and how to get it done without spending a fortune.

Is the finish a matte finish, or is it that it has not been buffed? It also could be the pictures... not sure.

I removed all the trim, sanded down the whole body (start with like 220, and work up to 400-600 depending on the condition of the old paint) fill or pull any dings or dents then just wipe down the body with that wax and grease remover. I'd reccomend a primer sealer if your going with a new color, if not just P/S any areas that have bare metal or filler. Cost wise I can't say much, when I bought the primer, paint and clearcoat, along with reducers/hardeners, it cost around 250$. The paint thats on here (I ran out, and had it sprayed) was shot by a friend of mine, but I've heard estimates between 800-3000 depending on how much you prep yourself and what type of job it is. Hope that helps a bit.

I had originally gone with the euro trunk look, and just debadged the Diesel side, but decided to go with a completely clean trunklid. I was thinking the same thing, gotta get the bumpers back, but kinda liked the look without

Got more parts put back on (the outside at least, still only have seats, the shifter and a dash inside). Got done late so only have night pics.

The Autowerkes plate is from when my dad bought his '85 300D in 1991, so it has some sentimental value.

The original mirror was pretty much shot, and it never had the passenger mirror, so i pulled a pair off of the E320 before we got rid of it. There not perfect, but they work and aren't too noticable LOL.

FYI - A gentleman in my local MBCA section spent around $6000 to have a shop completely strip and paint a W123. I couldn't tell it was a repaint until I was told. It looked completely factory quality.
