pj67,

Don't U mean wheel covers? Hub caps are at the end of the spindle behind the wheel covers.

Decal,

It not the radiator cap that is causing your problem. I run with a loose radiator cap in cold weather and in all weather in the engines I use Evans waterless coolant. This saves stress and strain on the cooling system.

U probably have a leak in the head gasket. Get it tested by a mechanic that has a pressure cooling system tester. Its a device that has hand pump to pressurize the cooling system and gauge to show any pressure loss.

Or have a Frabow (not sure of spelling) test done. Its another test to find a cooling system leak.

Sometimes, usualy the ATF looks like a strawberry milk shaker after that. And a transmission rebuild is not far down the road either.

Talking Seems to have been the cap!

The cap on the reservoir was rated at 13lbs. Mercedes said theirs was 18. Seems to have solved the problem, maybe for now? Strange thing is, why it just started spewing out of the cap like that. Guess it just reached that point. The 18psi cap is working properly, it is not overheating, and there is no pressure when engine has cooled down. The only time there was a leak from the pressure cap was initially, to dispose of the additional, unneeded coolant in the reservoir. (Over the "fill up to here" line)

Thanks, everyone! I will keep you posted if I find otherwise - After an hour of idling at 80c and 30 miles of highway driving, there was no coolant loss!

Strange, very strange!

Appreciative,

Decal,

U should be able to run your engine without a radiator cap in all but the hotest weather when the temperature of the coolant may exceed the boiling temp of the coolant. The idea of a radiator cap it to pressurize the cooling system thus raising the boiling point of the coolant. Below the boiling point the radiator does nothing.

I am afraid that your problem of loosing coolant will return.

Decal, I've seen a W126 similar to that with the retrofitted wheel covers putting around Houston. Are you in Houston?

Still runnin fine!

COOL! Literally! It's still running fine, after 50+ miles and three cool down / startup cycles. I am so relieved!

Oh, and no, I'm not in Houston. I'm in the Dallas Area. The hubcaps are from my 1973 450se, which has been retired due to the fact that it gets 7 mpg. Cool ass car, though - same color, too! The green leather interior and flush euro bumbers I JUST LOVED, but it had to be relieved of it's duties. I wanted a part of that car to live on in this one, for posterity's sake.

=)

I will be posting interior shots soon!

Thank you all.

i suspected the clutch fan right away. the aux fans from the ac seemed to me to be keeping the temp in bay, plus the movement of the car.

so i would check that .

great looking car. the 617 turbos tend to need a head gasket at around two hundred seventy thousand miles from normal use. the head works around and wears out the sealing surfaces. then you need to mill the head, deck the block and usually some valve work will be beneficial. but at that mileage if taken care of the bottom end should be like new.

i was wondering about the wheel covers. unusual for a us spec car not to have bundts.
