Yes, on the modulator.

I did the VCV procedure and it went all the way to the right of the top slot (turned CCW). I set it at that. Is that normal?

That's not been my experience. With the pedal ALL the way to the floor, you very gently rotate it, and stop when you feel resistance. On the several different ones I have adjusted, it ends up smack in the middle of the adjustment range. I presume you located both bolts (top & bottom).

Last tranny fluid change was less than 1k ago, though I didn't change the filter or drain the torque converter. I forget what brand it was, but it was a red bottle and had Max Life on it and was for older transmissions. It's widely available. How is the torque converter drained and refilled?

I would definitely change all the fluid, AND the filter. DO NOT over-tighten the pan bolts, they are very low torque, something like 7Nm. Just barely hand-tight. The torque converter has a drain plug with a 4mm (?) Allen/socket head drain plug similar to the drain on the pan. You rotate the engine by hand (27mm socket on the front crank bolt) slowly until the plug is visible at the bottom. Mark the harmonic balancer with white-out or yellow paint or something, so you can easily find it for future changes. Total is 7 quarts for that car if you drain both & change the filter. Add four, start engine & go through gears with your foot on teh brake, then add the next two, and add a pint at a time slooooowly to make sure you don't overfill. Remember that when cold the proper level is about 10mm below the "MIN" mark, when hot it should be in between MIN and MAX. It's hard to get a clear reading though.
