Salvage/recyclers good, bad or just plain ULGY
I am looking a used tranny (can not afford a rebuilt at this time) for my 300SD. I Googled used MB Tranny and got about 12 different place that have one. Any one on here had Good, Bad or ULGY results that you have tried around the country???
Thanks for your help Joe |

Try to find a good, local tranny rebuilder. Your local MB dealer should be able to recommend one. Buying used trannys and engines can be a total crap shoot.

a few years ago I bought a 4spd auto trans for my mom's 81(/) 240D, it was from "European Connection" and the guy who runs the place ("Bernie") gave me a 6m warranty as to its operation - said he pulled it from a running car.
I was really skeptical, but the transmission works fine, still does. Yes, used trans' can be a crap shoot. -John

Is a local shop going to be able to rebuild one of these trannies?
they aren't too complicated? I don't know anything about these transmissions so I am sincerly asking and not being sarcastic. I have a 603 in an 87 300d, what transmission is behind that and would any of you trust it to a local transmission shop?

Are you all sure that your trannies are indeed bad, and don't just need adjustment? I hate to state the obvious, but I have seen lots of MB transmissions declared "bad" when they just need tuned. Good luck either way!

Ah, yes, that would be a pretty good indicator that vacuum adjustment's not going to help much!
Have you (OP) tried Jim, who posts in the parts classifieds? He's in southern IN, and I'll bet he's got a used tranny. I have read good things about dealing with him.

Well I did some checking today, ran a carfax on the car and found out that it stated life in St. Louis and moved here by the 3rd owner. Which make me the 5th owner. The fax said that it had been in for a service back in 2002. So I call Scholfield and ask them what had been done to the car. Said it was in for a basic look over and a tranny adjustment. As far as I can tell it's the orginal tranny that came with the car.
I did call a couple of local shops and got rebuild prices starting at $1200. up to $2800. So I call Euroasin salvage (local) and the guy can get me a used one for $600. with a 45 day warranty. Did talk to a couple of other salvages up north WI and MN and one guy in Texas, they all said the same thing $600. to $750. delivered. So now I just have to decide, but I think I am going to go with the local guy for easy of pickup and if I have a problem he is local. Joe |

used tranny
Too bad your not closer. I was at a local junk yard today and there was a 84 sd that had just come in. Its a self service yard and he charges $50 for a transmission.

I would suggest looking hard for a self-service upullit-type yard in your area.
Then find a car that was moving when hit and pull its transmission. This will greatly improve your odds and decrease your investment. Rick

I have had my tranny in now for about 2 1/2 weeks. I have been to OKC and back last Saturday and then to my sisters house last night up in Ellsworth. The car is running better than ever. I plane to change the oil this weekend, and when I change it in 5K I will replace the filter and fliud again.
I feel that if there is anything floating around that it should come out with this fluid change. It may be a little over kill to do this, but better to be safe and driving then sorry and stuck out in the middle of no where. |

Naw, quick fluid changes are not overkill on an unknown unit.
