1995 pre-glow harness - through cowl routing?

Folks,

I started the R&R of the preglow harness last night ( listening to the Sabres WIN on the radio! ), and the non-pre glow part of it ( the flapper sensors, the themo hookup at therm housing, the other on on the head, and two hookups to the IP ( wish I knew what they all are ), route through the cowl and enter the battery box.Havent removed the battery yet, but HOPE to find the multi-pin connector down there, my question is....

how do you snake the hanrness through the cowl? There is a very small slot ( covered by sound insulation), btu I cant see how the multi-pin connector goes through there.

Anyone BTDT!? There must be a way of doing this correctly without hacking anything up. TIA!

Also exactly what is the device mounted behind the IP? There is, what I thought was a vaccum line strapped to the preglow harness cover, but I dont think its a vaccum line. Starts at "the device: ( a 7"x4" box) and terminates near the GP relay, into what looks like a solenoid, and continues on from there up to the brake booster area and disapperas into the firewall. Is it the vacuum pump?

Towards each side of the panel with the sound insulation, you should find two thubscrews. Undo these, and take the rubber sealing strip off the top, and you should be able to take the whole panel out, which should reveal the wire routing between the engine bay, and the wiring connector.

On my car, this is where the brake cylinder is, but, perhaps your steering wheel is on t'other side?

George, thank you, actually the preglow harness end goes into the battery box on the opposite side of the car.( Yankee drive no doubt) I saw a thumbscrew in the center where the wiring routes out of the engine bay.

Number Cruncher - ha, me too in a way! THNX!

Gene,

Yes, I think that some bits and pieces will be on opposite sides, as mine is RHD.

I'm quite interested to hear how you get on with the job. When I had the cylinder head off mine a few weeks ago, I noticed some breaking up of the insulation by the temp sensor. So, I'll need to swap the harness soon.

Incidentally, is there a right way and a wrong way to connect this sensor - the plug and socket each have four pins / holes, and it looks like you can put it back any way you like?

Ideally, of course, I should have fitted a new harness there and then, but having just spent a few hundred pounds on the engine, it wasn't the best time to gain agreement to raid the household funds!

Cheers,

George

Which connector? The one that goes through the firewall is a multipin ( maybe 16), the glow plug end is only 6. The rest are somewhat directional in how they go on.

This harness was really buggered- the insulation would crack off the glow plug lines by simply rolling it between your fingers. The temp sensor up by the thermostat was grounded against the fuel lines! I didnt bother checking impedance, it was non serviceable. Although the car ran quite well when warm. Terribly when cold though.

Maybe there's some difference between our cars. Towards the back of the cylinder head of my engine (OM606), there are 2 coolant temperature sensors. One 2 pin sensor, which I *think* is for the dashboard gauge, and one 4 pin sensor, which I think is for the pre-glow system. Perhaps thers something missing on my car, because it looked like you could put the 4 pin connector back anyway you liked.

I'll investigate that tomorrow eve. THNX for the thumbscrews. The first one
I turned, and turned, and turned, did nothing, didnt think it was threaded. It was. But it made me doubt myself and post here for help. Have acess now.

The US 606 ( or at least the one in my garage) has a 4 pin coolant sensor in the head near the rear, and a two pin up near the thermostat housing. Old 2 pin had rubbed clean to bare wire on the fuel hard line. And the temp still showed on the dash!? Go figure!

Cheers!

I'm glad that you have sorted out the routing issue - I find the detail of this part of the bulkhead really quite complex. When I had this apart to lubricate the wiper linkage, most of my time was spent just fiddling about with bits of plastic and rubber sealing strips - it took ages!

Yes, that sounds like the one I'm a bit concerned about - I didn't see any obvious way to make sure the connector goes back on the right way - if indeed there is a right and wrong way.

Of course, it's possible that someone who had been there first had already broken the alignment feature off either my sensor or connector. Having said this, the pre-glow seems to work OK at the moment. Which is nice.

Yes, indeed, I deliberately put it on a few different ways. Hoping your question above is the answer. They would have made it directional if it need be. Wrapped the "baking pan" in heat insulation., Maybe this one will last longer than 220K, er, 160K, since it was replaced at 60K according to the service records.

For the record, hardest is the AC plug. Tight in there. Had to be careful not to ruin the socket when I so nimbly tried to remove the plug with a screwdriver!

Only anomoly I found was an extra 2pin connector that fed out fot he cneter lom, ( IP hookups). I noticed the old harness has a set of wires clipped inside the encasement as well.

Anyway, runs good!
