You should have pulled over killed it at once and had the car towed. You probably did crack the head or blow the head gasket, if you are luckly. I'm kind of suprised the engine didn't lock up. Pressure test the cooling system and send an oil sample out, see what you get.
I didn't actually drive it straight for 10 miles. I drove it for maybe 1/4 mile, until the coolant temp needle got nearer to the white zone, then killed the engine and waited (a long time) until the temperature descended to 80 degrees. Then started it up and went as far as I could until the above happened again. I assumed I was safe so long as I kept the temps below the red zone. It took a very long time to get back.

This happened at ~ 10:30 pm, and I without my cellphone (first night of the month I'm without it, and I deserve flak for that one; agreed) and no help around for miles.

FWIW...Its been 16 hours since I parked that car after a rock solid pressure hose. It is now moderate, to low pressure (can squeeze together with two fingers,...barely). Last night at 11:00 pm, it was moderate (could not squeeze together with two fingers but only with my right hand) at 6:00 pm it was firm (as granite) when I parked it.

Thanks guys for your collective thoughts. Car runs great, even still.
