Secondary Fuel Filter (Spin On)/ Loss of Power 240D

Noticed a "come and go" loss of power in the past few weeks. Changed out the primary filter (it had actually clogged so bad that the suction on it caused it to collapse) and things got better.

Last night, however, I was on the highway and couldn't get it to hold about 60mph. I had a cramp in my quad from jammin on the pedal. Thought maybe a chunk of something in the pre-filter but that looked good. Maybe no air? With the rain yesterday I figured dust was way down so I took out the air filter. Didn't help.

So this afternoon I check'd the forum and someone suggested the Spin On filter. Changed it out with a Purolator from PepBoys and now I'm back to holding 75 on small hills and 70 on long ones.

Now someone set me straight. Where exactly does the spin on filter come in the fuel cycle. My impression has been that it filters just before return?

in this order is your fuel filters.
1 tank strainer in fuel tank
2. inline prefilter
3. spin on filter
rinse and repeat. the spin on filter filters the fuel AFTER it goes through the lift pump.

Wow collapsed pre-filter and I thought I had bad fungus. I usually change them when I can't see the white interior screen anymore.

The spin-on filter is just after the lift pump, but before fuel goes into the injection pump. It makes the fuel really really clean before it enters the high-tolerance areas of injection pump and injectors.

Thanks guys for clearing up my fuel cycle question. The collapsed filter seems to be the last of my algae. On a new prefilter I haven't seen a speck and I've been driving it now about 2 weeks with no change. I've run a little biodiesel and a couple gallons of Powerservice over the winter. Maybe that's what cleaned me up.
