A non working turbo makes the car accelerate slower than a garden slug. Of course, stuck open waste gate or if the ALDA is not getting boost signal will make it accelerate the same way.

at about 2KRPM, the motor should start to pull hard, if it does not. you have no boost.
a boost pressure gauge would assist in checking out the turbo too.

Mercedes turbo engines installed on 126 and 123 cars have a connection to driver's neck, when that turbo kicks in you will feel it in your neck.

Or, if you have a neckbrace on and you can't feel the turbo, you could put a pressure gauge (mityvac should work) on a t after the alda (between where the vacuum hose comes out the intake and to the alda - at least it does on the 92 300D) and then see what pressure is going to the intake. Should be around 10psi at around 4000rpm I believe (on a 92 300D).

Don't take my word for it though, I'm not an expert (yet)
