parts cars questions....

Can a 300sd be started without an alternator? I'm going to see some parts cars tomorrow and I know for sure one doesn't have an alternator.

a diesel needs nothing except fuel to keep running. Just need a battery and a starter to get it going

Awesome.

I might end up buying two 116 parts cars and a 82 300sd this week as well. Have to start looking at some more things to check for buying parts cars....

I've been thinking about the 82 for a while, and just found out about the parts cars, but....

Get this....the Mrs. is the one who SUGGESTED not only that I purchase the 82, but that I also purchase the parts cars.

Me thinks I need to pimp one out for her and paint it whatever frickin colour her heart desires.

I'm not 100% sure about the 300SD, but on the w123 300D (CD, TD) the belt that drives the alternator also drives the fan.

It will start and run without the alternator, but it will overheat in minutes without the fan belt.

Yes, D.S, the sd and the D, (and I suspect ALL 617 vehicles.) the alt belt drives the waterpump.
so get the car moved rapidly, and shut it off quickly.

You can throw on a shorter belt to drive it home if it has no alternator. It will fire right up, just don't turn the lights on or use the radio etc.... You will need all the power you can get out of the old decrepit battery it probably has to drive the Brake lights and blinkers for a safe ride home!

Hmm...good thinking.

I will only be able to drive one at a time anyways, so what I will probably end up doing if I buy them both is to strip and alternator and take it back with me to drive it home.

Hmmm...now I find out one has no starter, not sure if it was the same one without the alternator.

How hard is it to remove and replace a starter on a 116, and how much time is involved?

Thanks.

Starter, turbo? If not, shouldn't take long. If yes, it's located just under, eaiser to access from below. Will take longer, of course! Agree with most others, alt turns water pump.

if you get a short enough belt you can run it directly to the pump.

That's a clever solution.

I was trying to road test my 84 300TD last week with the alternator out, not realizing that the fan/waterpump wouldn't be spinning. I almost overheated it in less than a mile, but fortunately I looked at the temp gauge before it got too hot. When I saw that gauge I immediately remembered the belt path, but I never would have thought to put on a shorter belt.

Come to think of it, how would you put on a shorter belt? The belt tension adjustment is done with the alternator.

you would have to pull the fan /wp pulley, and get a belt the "right" size, then bolt on the pully with the belt on.

How long does it take to R&R an alternator?
