Selfishness is the real problem here!

It is the me first attitude that is the problem. I see little difference between the driver who turns into traffic 200' in front of someone else and then goes 10 mph slower than the speed limit, and the driver who is 5' off your bumper on a two lane road when you are maintaining a 3 second count behind the car in front of you. Both are jerks, both are inconsiderate, both think they and their needs or wants are more important that avery one else's, and both are dangerous. Common courtesy is absent amoung a substantial number of people on the road today!

One thing I have noticed that is a major change from 10 to 15 years ago. 10 to 15 years ago if some one was doing something inconsiderate or stupid or rude, 9 out of 10 times it was a guy. Now the majority of inconsierate drives are women. And the worst are women in SUV's. What makes it worse is often they are driving with kids in the car.

Just do what nearly all NY drivers do... don't acknowledge the existence of anyone else on the road, ever. Now if you have a boat, it seems you are instantly a life long friend and people are offended if you do not interact for at least three minutes. I used to care but now I really don't give a hoot what others think. I found a nice bumper sticker "When I retire I'm gonna move up north and drive slow in the left lane". If I piss off new yorkers I tell them "it's a florida state mandate to piss off as many yankees as possible- am I doin' my job?"

You might realize that this is a totally selfish society. Nobody counts other than #1. People park in handicapped zones.........park right up next to the store in the fire zone........drive at 85 mph when the traffic won't allow it...........do a U-turn across three lanes of traffic because they must go the opposite way............don't wait for the traffic on the exit ramp, simply pass them all and squeeze in at the last possible moment...........don't wait for the traffic merging in front of you from the onramp, simply pass them and squeeze in at the very end of the lane..........the list is endless.

That's my pet peeve..........a lack of common decency..........and it's pervasive.

I remember a friend's dad (can't remember which friend it was, long time ago) who used to doze off at long lights and count on the horn from the guy behind him to wake him up when the light turned green. I kid you not. Talk about dangerous/annoying!

To remove all these inconsiderate people from the roads require them to go to Germany and travel the Autobahns for at least 100 Miles. If they survive, they can come back and drive in our country.
Most won't make it back alive.

I haven't been there in 10 years, but, I have vivid recollection of the fact that they drive like professionals and they pay strict attention to the road. Absolutely none of the BS that you see around here.

the traffic enforcement in europe is awesome..
ticketing for travelling in the passing lane, violations for "rude behavior", following too close violations..

in the end it is seemingly an overall higher degree of common sense, and a whole lot less "pride in self."
not to be unpatriotic or anything.. but having suv's and people in general run you down is ridiculous. $.02

We spent 10 days travelling mostly the backroads in France this Spring and it was a refreshing change. The only jerk on the roads I encountered was ME.

I'm glad you said more so in the city, I live in rural westrn NY. We still have horse and buggies. I'm still the fastest in these parts with my bio burnin' 123. Btw my neighbors are Amish, everybody waves and is very courteous. Towards the city, many people look at me as a high classed snob because of my Benz, little do they know I drive for free cause I burn WVO and bio. I get more breaks in traffic, driving my rusted out Subaru than I do driving the Benz, once again the snob factor.

The new gen CRDI diesels from MB, Audi and Honda are mighty fast, with their superb powerband and real high torque at lower RPM, they smoke most gassers, no longer would a new generation C220/270 or Audi or a Accord diesel be ever bullied by gassers. The Accord 4 cylinder diesel for instance gives the gas six cylinder a good run for money, IMHO, thats good enough for me to drive diesels with pride on road.

In a 25 minute commute, the maximum that can be saved by driving 10 over the limit is about 3 minutes........compared to driving right at the limit.

If you make a given trip of exactly the same distance on multiple occasions.........try it. Press the envelope and see what your time will be. Then drive the limit and see what your time will be.

So, since you both are in such a hurry.........what do you do with those extra three minutes.???

And, unless you are travelling more than 30 miles........it's only going to be 3 minutes.

FWIW, I make a 147 mile return trip from CT to NY every week. My record time if I push the vehicle to 75 mph for most of the trip in CT and 70 mph in NY is 139 minutes. The typical time with 67 mph speeds and no dangerous driving is 150 minutes. So, effectively, the maximum saving for 150 miles is only 11 minutes.

It's the traffic flow, traffic signals, and interchanges that affect the time.........not the vehicle speed.
How did you figure 3 minutes? Here are 2 issues for you to consider.

1. Whether the wife goes to work at 0715 or 0730 hrs, it doesn't matter. Same speed too. Arrives at the same time. So, if you hit the traffic at a certain time, you're screwed. Some people decide to speed up a little so they miss that window. Miss the lunch hour traffic by 5 mins and you could be fine. Hit the lunch hour or quitting hour traffic and you are in trouble.

2. Sometimes people speed up to miss that red light. Why? because if they hit that light, they will be stopped at every light down that long road. Been there and had that happen where I make the light and make every light down the road. Stop at that one and every one stops me.

So, those are factors that might affect the time and tell you why people drive faster. Now, those are just some reasons why people do what they do. Your estimate of 3 mins is only good on a track where there is no other traffic and stop signs.
