Any reason to keep the air cleaner accordian hose and scoop?

To make room and provide easier access, I want to get rid of the accordain hose and air scoop, make a short snout for the air cleaner pointing down. Do you see any problems with this?

hmmm..

Well aside from keeping the nice stock asthetics, I think it is best to get the coolest / cleanest air possible to the air cleaner / intake.... :)

ANything else would get more road grime and hot air... eeps no good... ;)

Yes, it breathes in cool, clean air from outside the car. Your down tube would block just as much access and draw in warm engine bay air.

take it off and it sounds bawlsy but mercedes put it on there so you dont humiliate yourself by loosing to a moped :P

I did my own on my 85' 300D. I found a junk yard filter housing from a 90 something Hyudi,Mitu something (find one without holes in it). $30 if I remember right and the yard did not know about the K&N filter in it. Several hoses from the junk yard and rubber glue. Use the hole in the right fender well, I have never had a water problem, it is inside of the outer fender well. Hope the link works for the pics, here it is.................http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h145/hotwheelbill/300D%20air%20induction/

The Mercedes Engineers put it there for a reason....

Somewhere in Stuttgart there is an older automotive design engineer who put that "schnorkel" there in order to allow for cooler air to enter the air cleaner/engine. If you check the later model Diesel Benzes you will notice that there is a louvered area on the forward end of the right front fender....this is where those cars pick up their clean and cooler air.....

How frequent is maintenance and access necessary there? It only takes a couple of seconds to remove the hose anyhow, and as others have pointed out, your snorkel will take up more room than the stub of the scoop would.

I was looking on Craigslist.com one day and see that a guy is selling "MB 15" rims". I called the man up and he told me that they were Ronal rims. I jumped on them $200 but I did clean, clean, paint the centers metalic silver, wish I had gone a little darker. And then polished the outer rim of the wheels, then painted with clear. Here is what they looked like when I got them.

NOW I GET IT!!

When I saw people posting about their 85' 300D etc., I thought that they were simply putting the ' at the wrong end of the '85, ... now I realize that they mean their 85' 300D looks good from 85feet away!!

Oh silly me, thanks for clearing that up for me Bill.
