Engine won't crank
My alternator was charging at 13.9 volts last I checked a week ago and I have not had starting problems. I did a few 0-60 timed runs today after which I noticed the temp gauge needle fluctuating. So I tried to find the temp sender and wasn't sure if I found the correct one. I then tried to start the engine and it won't crank. Measured battery voltage and it was at 12.40 volts. It is on the charger now. What do you think happened? Did the alternator crap out during the timed runs? Sounds unlikely. Battery crapped out? Both crapped out?

After a few hours of charging, I tried cranking the engine again. No go. But something weird is happening: The high beam, battery light and seat belt indicator came on when I turned the key on even though the headlight switch was off. Yet when the key was turned off, the indicator lights stayed latched on! I had to disconnect the battery to turn them off.
I do not have my Hayes manual with me so no wiring diagram to refer to. Can someone point me to a wiring diagram online (if available) of the start and accessory relay circuit? I am suspecting a bad battery because while charging, I measured 15.5 volts across it. It shouldn't go that high I don't think. Tomorrow, if it still won't crank, I'm gonna see if there is power to the glow plugs and if so, jump the starter solenoid and see if it starts. If not I'm buying a new battery.

I had a battery go bad and not allow charging, so its possible. Its got to be either a bad battery, voltage regulator....or ignition switch. Probably the battery if you are reading random voltages like that.

i suggest checking and cleaning all your grounds, including the engine to chassis strap. an auxiliary ground from a starter bolt to the battery is sometimes needed on an older car as well.

Tom, you were right on! It was a loose bolt on the engine ground strap!
