1998 E300d AC not blowing cold

Hello folks. Very excited about my new , for me , E300d, It has 117k on it. Anyway I just received the car and it is great except the AC does not blow cold at all. The compressor is not coming on. I checked the fuse and it was fine. I was wondering is there a relay box or another fuse somewhere that I am missing.

Just to note every electrical system on the car works fine and all buttons controls on the climate control operate properly.

Thanks in advance

start car, turn climate control on, and then push and hold "REST" for five seconds.

Use left "AUTO" button and toggle through the first 7 items of data and post here. Right auto toggles in reverse order.

Then get error codes: hold EC and Recir for 5 secs and toggle through all codes until you get to EB. The codes are 4 digits. Am a little hazy on this one, it may be EC and Cabin Filter to get into error mode.

To get the codes:

Ignition ON.
Left side HI right side LO.
Within twenty seconds of turning the ignition ON, press and hold EC and REST for 5 or so seconds, until the screen goes blank and the lamp on the RECIR button flashes. If the unit doesn't respond, turn the ignition OFF then ON and try again.

Press the right AUTO button to see the codes in order.

I wouldn't normally recall the procedure, but had just extracted the codes from mine.

This link:

http://www.continentalimports.com/ser_ic40142.html

says that it's the sun sensor and emissions sensor, resp. FF is simply "end of codes."

Neither the sun nor the emissions sensor will do anything to stop the AC from working properly.

Follow TMAllison's earlier instructions, and post the first seven values. Do it with the engine running at at least 1500 RPM and AC engaged, preferably.

Ac sensor codes

sensor codes are as follows
1 25
2 20
3 36
4 36
5 22
6 50
7 00
8 20

I checked on eclassbenz.com it diagnosed my problem as low refrigerant. It said the b124 and b125 codes would not lead to no AC

sound right?

Thanks all for your help

I wouldn't put much stock in their automated diagnostic system, but #7 shows that you don't have *any*.

Is your EC lamp on?

Hook up a pair of gauges and see if they confirm the zero pressure reading. You might try simply adding (a bunch of) refrigerant.

Matt - I'm not at home so have no data and am doing this from memory. Isnt #7 the referigant pressure in bar?

If zero referigant you should do a leak/dye test before refilling.

#7 is indeed a pressure in bar reading and zero means there's no refrigerant left in it. Confirm this with gauges but assuming it is zero don't just add "a bunch of refrigerant" as it will surely leak out. The system should be checked for leaks, which it obviously has if there is no refrigerant left.

I had a hole in my condensor in my '98 which I replaced last fall - it is not uncommon. Another common fault is the line between the receiver-drier and the condenser, those do fail too. In any event before you even think about recharging a system with no refrigerant left you should find the leak, fix it, replace the receiver-drier and evac and refill it.

Red face

Well thanks again everyone. I'm sure I will have lots more questions, well actually hopefully not, in the future. I have had the car for 2 days and besides the AC thing its great.

Looking to join the Pacifica/ Half Moon Bay biodiesel co/op and get off fossil fuels and see how it goes. I'll keep you posted on the AC problem.
