Need to rivet W123 OM617 Turbo Timing Chain
I have all the parts to do the timing chain change, but I don't want to take a hammer to the cam sprocket to secure the pins in the chain.
First because I'm not good with hammers and second I don't trust my skill with the hammer and pin. Any retail places rent out tools? I'm in the socal area Any one have somthing I could rent, borrow? Perhaps a timing chain riveting tool? I called technictool.com and they want $270 for the press with adapter, uggg. That would be cool if I was a mechanic, but I am not a professional. What to do? |

I have read several times of individuals using a very large pair of vice grips and getting the tooth of the pliers right in the middle of the rivet and clamping down. Google search these forums the info is out there.
Also I would thing this is something a motorcycle place might be able to help with.

Carson - that would be awsome but I'm in long beach. Unless, you got a tool I can borrow?
As for pliers/vice grips I don't think so. Motorcycle chain tools - maybe, but I wonder if they can accomodate the width of the timming chain. Autozone/kragens- I don't think have these kinds of tools. |

I live within 2 miles of the 91 and 605 and 405. I work at oakley in lower Orange county, from there diego isn't that far.
But I'm willing to spend all weekend to get this over with. |

Ask around, there are plenty that have done it. The official tool is the same just one divot instead of several.

so how safe is the hammer and pin method? as far as securing it 100% Well the question really doesn't make sense. what I mean is, has anyone had ANY problems just hammering away at the chain to keep the pin in?

The recommended tool is little more than a bench vice with properly shaped pads and a fitting on the lead screw to take a torque wrench. I suppose you can fashion a tool out of a big c-clamp.
Basically you need to mushroom the small end of the pin. Measure the biggest diameter of the big end then mash the small end until it's about the same diameter. Sixto 93 300SD 3.0 |

Sounds like an aweful idea, the cam/sprocket is pretty sensitive afaik.

carson-thats exactly what is almost 300 bucks to buy. I bet it works like "butta".
sixto-that is an idea, but the end of the screw pin is too soft so you would have to make a sleeve to go over the c pin and you would be in buissiness. At least A2 steel, machined in a cone fashion. I don't have that capacity. Winmutt-I bet that would work, But frak man...100 bucks for somthing I use once every 150k miles. I called a specialty autoparts store and they looked at me like an idiot. "your doing what?, your timing belt is open ended? why is that?" I guess those guys are used to Merican V8's that are easily changed out. |
