Stuck/Broken Glow Plug HELP!
I was changing my glow plugs and this one popped out looking like this.
I've never changed the glow plugs before. If I pull the Injector, would I have access to the end of the glow plug to tap it out? Any Ideas? Thanks, c |

I don't think you can. From what I recall, there is a shield over the GP tip in the pre-chamber that keeps the injectors from spraying on the GP directly. I think this blocks you from getting at the tip. It's been a while since I've worked on a diesel engine.
I may be wrong, I hope for your sake.

Pencil type
That almost looks like it could be a "pencil type". Here is a pic from the Diesel Giant . scroll down to see the pix

You are not saying what year your car is but I think I see two different glow plugs pictured and nothing missing on either one. The top one is an early style loop for a series connection amd the bottom appears to be a "pencil" type for parallel connection.

Those two GPs came out of the same car. Yes, tell us what year you have.

might be able to remove the injector and the heat shield and see if you can see anything other than the little ball in there

Your car (pre 80) came with the "Loop style" (upper GP in photo). I see nothing missing from either plug so if I were you I would switch to the new style, much better for lots of reasons, but You dont want too "mix them".

Ditto, it really looks like someone used a glow plug from a fast glow kit(pencil style) on this car. Notice the shorter stud for the 12v connection? That's because the fast glow plugs don't use the porcelain insulators.
As stated before, you can't mix and match glowplugs. The great advantage of the fast glowplugs is that they continue to work even if ine burns out, unlike the loop plugs, where the whole glow system shuts down if one glowplug goes out. Plus, they heat up much faster. |

Interesting that somebody did the "mix and match", thats a new one on me anyway get ALL the new style, I garentee you wont regret it. You must disconnect the ground strap at the fwd end tho. Lots in the archives on this.

I've never seen GP's like those shown in the pic. I actually thought they were missing the ends.
...and they lived happily ever after.

Those are both the "fat" ones (18mm?) to fit the early engines.

looking at the second pic, I do not think it is a pencil plug. if it is, near the part# it will have a voltage marking, 3V for the loop style, and either 9V or 11V for the parallel type.
if it was the parallel type, there would be a brass bottom and the insulator would not be able to fit on the screw. also the threads on the screw end would be a finer pitch. I hope it is. I have both in my stable, and the pencil plugs I Have, are brass where the wire sits. not that slide spacer for the insulator... odd. this looks like a hybrid style serial plug. I do think this is how it's supposed to look though. John
