What is an acid brush? Will this remove most of the buildup on the bottom plate?

this is a great thread. My fuel gauge just started acting up. When I get a chance will dig into it.

An Acid Brush has a hollow round metal handle with short bristles crimped on the end. Harbor sells them in packages of 25 or more. I furst used them when I worked at Sylvania doing electronic work. they are used a lot when soldering.

Do a Google search on them, lots of info.

I use them when doing small jobs with POR, or using glue.

I discovered when cleaning the sender for my 81 that the copper wire was corroded and broke in 2 places. Much to my surprise I found using a strand of copper wire from a lamp cord actually worked beautifully! I think the silver wire is the one you have to have special wire for.

I've been reading this forum for 8 years now. There's still gold left in this mountain of information and I'm still mining.

Got stuck today in my 300SD

Argh, I was driving along happily with what I thought was 1/4 tank and my car quit. It felt like it was out of diesel. It was. I got it home on a flatbed (AAA idiots came to rescue me first with a can of gasoline after I specifically said I need diesel). They don’t carry diesel.

Anyhow I took out the sender and it was the usual black gunk deal. I’ll post up some photos of the W126 300sd location. On my car you cannot get to the sender through the first aid box. Seat had to come out. I did get the sender out with some slip joint pliers. I’ll post up photos when I get to my pc.

My 240d was a lot easier.

Same old same old. Broken copper wire. Too short to solder. Gummed up shorting bar. Clogged labyrinth endcap. Cleaned up all is good. I really ran it bone dry and it was a bear to prime. My thumb hurts!

Ok here are the W126 photos. A little different than the W123 since the seat must be removed.

Behind the seat.

Pull the sensor with Knipex Alligator pipe pliers. German tools for a German car.

The rest is the usual stuff. Gummed up sensor. Black spooge all over the wires. Same stuff as the other images in this thread. Broken copper wire. I guess that thing whipping around was making my Reserve light flicker. I should have cleaned it up when I saw this but I kept driving thinking the needle was still working.

My odometer reads low too. I still have a slipping problem in the gears despite multiple attempts at new gears and shimming the stepper motor. So I thought I'd only gone 300 miles since my last fill. I also thought I had a quarter tank.

It was funny, the AAA guy knew diesels. He asked me if it quit slow or quit fast. I said it was great then bam it just flamed out like it ran out of fuel. He said, "not the filters."

Well I've recovered. Thought I'd share the 126 specific stuff since I was thinking this afternoon I could just go in under the first aid kit and pull the sender.
