From what I've been told Mercedes Benz used wood from where ever they could get a lot fast. Heinz told me that from the looks of it, my wood came from the german black forest because of the grain, but some cars came with walnut or poplar.

Thanks! It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be to remove the wood and do it right!

WOW! Scott98, that looks really cool! These cars amaze me! Everyone I've seen looks like the woods used in the trim are all different types. See, mine would never had taken a darker stain like that because of the grain. The grain would have just dissapeared. If I had to guess I would say your wood looks like chestnut! I believe mine is Black Forest Poplar. Great job! Isn't it nice when you take your time with it? Love the grain in the ashtray!

Wow man that looks great! You definitely have a different wood in there than me. My guess is that it looks like Ash because of the way that the color of the wood varies in fading shades with the stain going from darker to lighter and back, but not necessarily on the grain! I love the look of Ash and once had a Duncan Phyfe set of dinig room chairs made with Ash. I was almost going to say Yew Wood, but Yew does not have the pronounced grain striping like Ash does. Neat Job! Isn't it nice when you can be patient and make it come out right?

For Zebrano I noticed:

1977-1979 - more yellow-black like (yellowish)
1980-1982 - more yellow-red like (pale red)
1983-1985 - more red-black like (reddish)

Tip

Here is a good tip for you all.

There is a new clear coat product. It is NOT epoxy so it will not turn yellow with sun exposure.

It cures fast and you can spray several coats professionally. The clear coat is super hard.
I plan to use this for my rims. I will make a thread to advise wheel people.
Product:

Spray MAX 2K (2 part) rapid cut-in spot clear coat.
Part no. 3 680 062

the activator is inside the spray can. Once you release it, the stuff is good for 24 hours. So, that is how much time you have to spray your wood, rims etc.

cost: $20 per 12OZ can. Spray gun like results.

A friend gave me a little trick for repairing the wood from refinishing his 1993 300E, all you have to do pull it from the car, rub it with motor oil, let it dry, and wipe clean. Works like a charm!

Nice job, HDen. Mine looks really bad, so it's on the To Do list.
