Aligning 300 TDT Engine with Automatic Transmission in Place
Hi there...
I am new to this forum and I am wondering if someone could give me a helpful hint. I have an '80 300D Sedan with a rebuilt automatic transmission and an engine with a bad flywheel. I took the engine out and are trying to swap it with a turbo diesel engine from a 300TDT with a bad transmission. Everything worked great until it was time to put the TDT engine in my 300D. I can't get the transmission to lign up correctly with the engine. Mind you, I left the trany in place and did NOT remove it with the engine as suggested by the repair manual. I am close but there is 1/4 inch gap all around. Yes, I took the torque converter off the old engine and put it on the tdt engine. They match beautifully, but once bolted to the tdt I cannot get it to align. Has anybody ever tried an engine swap with the tranny in place? Is there something I am missing or is there a magic solution to the problem? Or do I really have to drop the transmission as well *** yiks*** something I did NOT want to do! I would be greateful for any hint someone could give me!!! Ruben |

How many clicks (steps) did you feel as you put the torque converter in?
Note that the torque converter must be in the transmission, not on the engine, to install it. |

Did you make sure the oil pump drive dogs on the torque convertor are engaged in the trans oil pump. It appears they are not. The recommended procedure is to fit the torque convertor to the trans, not the engine. The torque convertor is bolted to the flex plate after the trans and engine are together.
