Make sure and loop the oil cooler lines as well.

I did this with a small block chevy engine before installing it ina 914 Porsche.
Had to run it up to 2k RPM or so for several minutes to set the cam.
Open headers... neighbor kids gathered... Man, I would have hated to live next to me back then.

If I can get the compression numbers up, it'll start once I have the IP reinstalled and fuel hooked up to it. I've got a battery connected directly to the starter along with a remote starter switch hooked up to the starter as well. It's sitting on my garage floor right now.

My compression numbers didn't go up enough. I took the head off and found the tops of the cylinder walls had ridges on them. This engine looks like it needs a resleeve and rings. I think I'm going back to the idea of reassembling the block with the cylinder wall damage. None of the cylinder wall have any ridges. The one cylinder that has the damage is limited to the area where the rings won't touch. Maybe I could just put it back together like it is? I've got a good spare head for that block plus extra good pistons.
I'm just trying to see how inexpensively I can get this car running again.

liet,

What is the damage to the cylinder wall? Remember the piston travels above the area the rings touch.

The damage appears like tiny chunks were chipped out of the cylinder wall, sort of like pitting from corrosion. I guess I should try to take a few photos of the damage.

Liet,

That sounds like next to nothing. Just sand it smooth so nothing scrapes the piston.

That's what I'm thinking. I have to replace the piston because it has a lot of damage to the top. Also the head was damaged as well. It looked like part of the prechamber had broken off. The PO didn't give me the original head because it was junk but he did give me another good head.

I posted some photos of the engine block that has damage to the cylinder wall in the thread: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/189482-how-hard-change-sleeve-om617-92%2A-post1538643.html#post1538643
