Anybody got crazed clearcoat or peeling clearcoat?

I took my car to a body shop and they told me it would be about 2-3000.00 to fix it up, I asked if they could buff off the clear and put new clear on? they told me it was impossible.
well, I was working on it, and tried polishing it out with 2000grit paper wet, and it burned through in some places that way, so I tried something different...
I took a razor blade and GENTLY scraped at the peeling clear. IT WORKED!!!
I took some before pics, and some during pics. but the bottom line is it did the job. the razor blade had to be handled without a scraper, and very slowly chip away at the clear.
I made a few mistakes, and I could not get any of the good clear off (perhaps that's a good thing!) the clear came off like dry frosting on a year old doughnut! when I had all the clear off, the paint under it was a frosty version of it's color, so I applied some polishing compound with an orbital buffer, so far it looks great. I will continue in the morning. (why oh why would I tackle something like this while at the beach on vacation???) I just love working on my Benz!

now for the after shot of the same trunk/bonnet

I actually once did the same thing on a Chrysler with peeling clear. After removing as much loose clear as possible, I gently sanded the remaining clear and washed it with wax and grease remover before shooting a few layers of rattle can clear on it. A month later, I sanded and buffed the fresh clear to a smooth finish.

Oddly, I was saying the entire time that it wasn't worth the effort, because the car should have been properly resprayed, but the girlfriend at the time still wanted me to try. Three years later, the paint still looked good, though the DupliColor clear tended to haze a bit more readily than the vertical surfaces of the car, which still had factory clear on them.

The 85 300D I used to own had bad clear coat on the hood and tops of the front fenders. It only kept getting worse by spreading as time passed. It would have been a loosing battle to try to keep up with it. I would have kept it had it not been so bad and the price of diesel so high, compared to gas, at the time.

Yeah my SDL has a few spots that are driving me nuts! I want to repaint it so badly, hopefully this fall.

Figure it will cost $5k, give or take.

my 85 had the problem when I bought it 10 yrs ago. the roof, hood,
and front fenders. I think it had a little fender bender some time in it`s
former life, and had just enough paint to get it out of the bodyshop. this
is on the front end. so I tell the wife no problem, I can paint that. so
I do the top and rear quarter panels. took out the windows (front/back)
sun roof, deck lid, rear lights etc... get it all painted new gaskets. $1200.00 later, all done. not too bad for never painted silver metalic, &
clear coat.
now 9 yrs later, same thing again. can`t win with this stuff.
300SD same thing, pealing all over. didn`t help covering with a tarp all
winter. moisture get under the clear coat.
I think a solid color and just wax it once in a while is better.
From the pictures, your cars look pretty good. less time than painting.

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power
3) Not nearly enough power!! 240D w/automatic transmissions)

Nice improvement, but I will be interested to see what it looks like in 3 months. I suspect the base coat will start to fade rapidly once completely exposed to the elements.

roll it on

I made the mistake of having my paint "professionally" done. Then someone at work mentioned that you can roll it on. Google'd such a thing, and found out that yes, you can get good results using Rust-oleum and some rollers. A friend at work did his car, and my brother did his as well. Figure 100+ hours and $100 for the entire car. My car took 3 months, $4000, and I am not happy with it.

vstech, you did a great job with the polishing, you may have found your true calling in life.

Thanks for the support, but that trunk looks like cra& still. I gotta get the rest of the clear off. I do not think it will fade, in the first pictures you can see the corner of the roof and the trunk that I polished with wet paper, I did that 7 months ago, and it has not faded at all. keep a good UV wax on it and keep it clean and I don't think it will fade.
I may strip the wax off and spray on some clear, but I am not sure about it's longevity.
