sloppy steering

I just got a 300cd, and it has a lot of steering play. I have checked all of the connecting points and narrowed the problem to the Power steering box.

Is this normal? Is there a known fix? I have looked at several DIY sites, but haven't found this kind of fault anywhere.

On the steering box is an adjusting pin with a locknut around it. Loosen the locknut and turn the pin 1/4turn CCW at a time until you get ~1" free play in the steering wheel.

Over adjustment will make it bind in tight turns so be careful.

The box's just wear out, you can adjust it and get a bit of slop out. If you want it real tight you will have to swap a rebuilt box in.
