Question Replace AC Compressor

I have a 85 sd with a noisy 134 compressor. I relized my compressor is going to lock up soon ,It is very cold ,but There is a intermitten grinding noise at idle just when it begins to rev up ! sounds like a bad bearing. Anyway I want to replace the compressor ,and the dryer, I been looking at posts , and want to know what is the correct amount of pag oil to put in the compressor ?Diesel giant says he put in oil in the dryer as well ? any thoughts? about this swap ? Thank,s J

Before you start this, check your belt tension. My compressor belt was loose and it really, really sounded like a bad bearing.

Take your time. Make sure everything is clean. If you get an R4 compressor from your local parts house, it probably will not have the proper seals.

Phil's compressors supposedly have the proper seals included.

This one is the old O-ring type.

The compressor will already have a lot of oil in it (at least mine did).

You'll also need to replace the expansion valve. That's a lot of fun.

If you haven't done so already, do some searches here. Tons of good info I found to help me through it.

clean the internals

if you do replace the compressor, follow DG's suggestion and clean every hose in your system. I was not able to get the compressor to accept oil, I was able to pour some into the hoses that lead into the compressor. So when it first turned over, there was several ounces of oil waiting.

The last thing I put in was the old temp sensor. It promptly broke due to metal fatigue, so I replaced it and the pressure sensor for good measure.

This is not a hard job. Cleaning the system out is time consuming, and a little messy.

The excitement for me was when I saw the system hold a nitrogen test charge for 30 minutes!

FINALLY!!! somebody that checks for leaks with pressure, NOT VACUUM!!! best way to test, plus it does not allow moisture into the system.
it blows my mind that most test for leaks with simple vacuum, and not heavy pressure.

pressure

I had a real home AC guy helping me with the 'fluid' parts. (discharge, pressure, vacuum, and charge) So I can thank him for the knowledge, and special tools.

Jef,

When you pull the existing compressor and drier off the car, drain the oil out of each of these and measure the amount of oil. This is how much you want to put back into the system with the new parts. There is a good chance that your new compressor will come with more oil then required when it is shipped. (I have had a new compressor come with 6 ounces of oil in it that also had a tag on it that indicated it was shipped without oil. Go figure.)

Here's what you do if it's so cold your diesel fuel gels. Smear some on some toast and stay inside until it warms up outside.

I also advise to verify condition and tension of the belt. It will sound just like a bad bearing if loose, worn. Also check bolts holding it on the bracket as well.
