I wonder if that 14 year old airbag went bad? The old ones are supposed to be replaced after 10 years, although I'm guilty of not replacing mine

Sorry about the accident...the damage doesn't look all that bad...I would guess they don't total it.

And I was on such a nice ramp of getting the bits and pieces sorted out.

Had to do a ridiculous amount of work to mine considering all I did was slide off the road into a white oak in the ice... didn't hit it as hard as the damage made it look...

What's going on here?
all the crash resisting structures are in the bumper. when the front goes down and the rear of the other car goes over it you get this. no way to avoid except not hitting brakes!

sorry to hear about it

Sixto,

Sorry to see after all the work you have put into the car. Hope the fixes are easy and cheap.

ouch! its a good thing you came out of that un hurt. But sucks to see the front end hit like that especially after having put in all that work into the engine.

more pics

It didn't take much to lift the hood. The latches still work. The release tab is permanently extended. Just needed a little prying for the grille to clear the electric fan motors.

Everything is butted up right against the engine. Hard to believe there used to be lots of room to work on the fan.

Coolant is gone, power steering fluid is gone and there's a fuel leak. Engine oil level is fine. The oil cooler is behind the bumper so it's intact and hardly moved.

In one pic you can just tell from the mount that the engine shifted aft. The turbo blocks the view to the other mount.

In one pic you can see how the airbag ripped through the dash to deploy. So much for those scribe lines around the SRS logo.

Sixto Ol' Buddy, I'm happy to see you're OK!

With all the "Sturm und Drang", you have endured with that car, it is time to move on. I believe you will find a nicer, better car, another W140? Maybe, maybe not. But something better. I say get away from it. I'm no quitter and you aren't either from what I've read about your struggle and victory with the engine, "rod-bender," saga. An S600 V12, should be easy.

another way to look at this--

Sixto, sorry to hear/see about this.

I had a similar accident in my SD last August. Hood buckled, grille, a/c condenser, radiator, oil cooler, front rad support and horns all toasted, no fender or bumper damage to my car.
The "Jag" I hit (X-type) suffered rear bumper cover damage+ a few plastic pieces, and the trunk lid opening had to be straightened.

300 bucks at the Pick n Pull and 500 from my body guy and my SD is fine again.

Yes, this stuff breaks, but it's also saving wear and tear on the people in front of you in being sacrificed.. and that's a good thing too. Were it not for all the expendable stuff, the occupant of the Jag would've been hurt. She graciously declined any medical claims, I just hope your situation turns out the same way.
