facelifted 140

I smacked the SD into a G6 this morning. The car ahead of me moved right, I checked over my shoulder to do the same, when I looked ahead the G6 was right there waiting to make a left.

As you can see from the fan motors poking through the grille, there's no lifting the hood. I gave the key a flick, something's binding the engine.

And I was on such a nice ramp of getting the bits and pieces sorted out.

If you're wondering, the windshield shattered when the passenger airbag deployed. I wonder if that's a design feature to soften the glass before someone puts his/her head through it. The passenger seat was unoccupied. Driver airbag didn't deploy.

G6 bumper shifted a hair. You wouldn't think a 140 slammed into it. The SD bumper was completely under the G6 so there's a tear where the tailpipe went through but otherwise the bumper is fine. The grille and radiator took the blow. Fenders and corner lamps are unscathed.

It's for the insurance to decide. My guess is parts alone exceeds blue book value.

I'm sorry to hear (and see) [about] the damage to your W140.

That's what happens when it hits the weakest section of the front end. Hood, grille, radiator support (ouch), radiator, fan, clutch, headlamp assemblies, etc. are likely needing replacement (also airbag and windshield).

How much does the car mean to you? Since it was a high hit, there's likely no structural damage. Just costs a bit of $$$$ to fix.

What's with this? I thought mercedes were supposed to be the ones that came out better in the crash... and yet there's this one, whatever it hit barely scraped... Mercedes not easily fixable...

Friend of mine rear ended a Saturn at road speed in a C220, Mercedes suffered, saturn bumper just got scratched...

Had to do a ridiculous amount of work to mine considering all I did was slide off the road into a white oak in the ice... didn't hit it as hard as the damage made it look...

What's going on here?

Oh man, I'm really sorry about this. But, I am glad you weren't injured, that is the most important thing. "A firm hand is needed early on" is a good mantra to remember when dealing with any insurance adjuster.

Sorry to hear what happened. I feel your pain. My '85 got totaled a year and a half ago. I rejected the insurance company's first offer and they came back with a little more. I faxed them recent repair receipts to help show why I though my car was more valuable than the average one. I hope yours doesn't come to that but just keep it in mind if it does. Good luck with everything. Remember, you can always buy the car back and keep it on the road. I did that with mine.

A solid car that doesn't deform passes the crash energy on to the passangers. Sixto's W140 did just what it was supposed to do, crumple, absorb the impact so Sixto takes less. If he was traveling at a higher speed you would see the hood flatten against the windsheild, and the engine would break off and go under the car. But from the windsheild back is the passanger compartment, it would not deform normaly. The W126 actualy has pretty good crumple zones considering that its a late 70's design. The W140 is one of the safer cars in the world.

Remember in any accident, you have three major impacts. The car into whatever it hits, you into the seat belt, and your organs into you. The idea is to have the car absorb as much energy as possible, so your organs don't have to.

Also Mercedes are low volume high end cars, so body parts naturaly cost a lot more.

Looks like $5k-$6k worth of damage, that sucks. But Sixto is allright, thats whats important.

Glad to see you walked away without a scratch If you do get er fixed, replace the drivers side air bag too. Makes no sense that passenger bag would detonate and drivers side did not.
