'85 TD timing chain
Dumb question (nonmechanic). Do diesels have timing chains? If so, how often should they be changed? I am going to look at a TD this weekend and want to know what I am looking for besides it looking pretty. BTW, it has 248,000 miles. I was supposed to see it last weekend but the lady had to leave town for a week. I'm dying to see it already.

Yes, check for stretch, use woodruff key if necessary, there is info on these items, just search. Check tensioner also. That's not a ton of miles, I like a wagon. Check rear suspension, they have a tendency to sag, can run a few $'s to correct. See if the windows work, climate control operates, shifting ok, A/C.

Every vehicle with an engine will have a timing chain or belt except for some rare cases like Studebaker and Packard! Both of those used gear drive! If your not a mechanic, find one you can trust and take the car to them for the inspection.
