Question 240d A/c Problem

Ok so im new to a/c repair but... i have checked the charge in my car it is up to spec. Borrowed my dads a/c sniffer that detects leaks and there were none. However my 240 with its manual c.c. seems to turn the compressor on and off at will. When the a/c works it will freeze you to death then all of a sudden, ehh, not so cold I stomp the accelerator the wow hey its back, nice and freezing I can even sit outside the car and watch the compressor do this. remember suposed Good charge. My father thinks its my expansion valve sticking, PLEASE ANYONE HAVE A CLUE??

I don't think the expansion valve will cause the compressor to cycle. My first guess would be the pressure switch on the dryer. Try jumping these contacts together and see if it still cycles. If that fixes it, you either have a bad switch or the pressure is actually low.

Thanks

Yeah I forgot about doing that. The last time I had to do that was after replacement of some a/c parts, had to do that to make it start working.

there is also a low pressure/temp switch on the evaporator to keep it from freezing up. it may also be bad, or indicating a low freon charge.

just bypassing the switch does not find the problem, the switch may be working properly. you may be low on refrigerant. before you evac, have it serviced and see what pressure the system is dropping out. it may not need switch replacement.

Yup, have them check the pressure before you pay to have it evacuated and recharged, it may be just a tad too low.
