Oil Pressure Questions 76 300D

OK what is the proper readings on oil pressure ?

First when its cold or when I am accelerating the gauge is always pegged.

when it gets "warm" at idle it will drop down to the middle (dead smack in the middle being a hair lower in summer hair higher in winter)

Is this normal? how do I check this? How do I know its reading properly?

So Cold its pegged. Driving its pegged. when I get to a light and its warmed to normal temps (175-180' which is around 82c) the pressure will drop to the middle until I hit the accelerator and it will goto "pegged" again.

Thanks! any help is greatly appreciated!

100% normal. The gauge only reads to 3bar (43psi) while the system operates at up to 7bar (100psi). That's why it's always pegged.

Forced,

The oil realease valve shoujld open way before the olil pressure gets to 100PSI.

Otherwise things like the oil filter can and oil cooler tend to rupture.

That video is with a warm engine, when it's cold it will go straight to the 100psi line and stay there.

It's my understanding that the guage is pegged cold because there is a temp controlled valve that won't open the system up to the oil cooler until 80deg.

GRIESL,

NO, its not because of the Temp valve. Its because the oil is more viscous when its cold.

I've heard when the oil cooler thermostat is closed, the gauge will read 2 bar when warm. I've observed this behavior before...sometimes on a warm engine it will drop to 1.5 bar, and other times it will drop to 2 bar. Today with the A/C on and the engine hovering near 100°C, it dropped down to about 1.2 bar.
